Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects many women. Here are five common symptoms of PCOS, explained in four points:
- PCOS often leads to irregular menstrual cycles. Women with PCOS may have infrequent periods, or they may experience heavy or prolonged bleeding. This irregularity is due to hormonal imbalances.
- PCOS can disrupt the normal ovulation process. Some women with PCOS may not ovulate regularly, which can make it challenging to conceive. Irregular ovulation is a significant symptom of PCOS.
3. Excess Androgen Hormones:
- Women with PCOS may have higher levels of androgen hormones, such as testosterone. This can lead to physical symptoms like acne, excess facial or body hair (hirsutism), and male-pattern baldness.
- On ultrasound, the ovaries of women with PCOS may appear enlarged and contain small cysts. These cysts are actually immature follicles that have not developed into eggs. The presence of polycystic ovaries is a key diagnostic criterion for PCOS.
4. Polycystic Ovaries:
5. Metabolic Issues:
- Many women with PCOS have metabolic issues, including insulin resistance. This can lead to weight gain, difficulty losing weight, and an increased risk of developing conditions like type 2 diabetes.
PCOS symptoms can vary from person to person, and not all individuals will experience the same combination or severity of symptoms. If you suspect you have PCOS, it's important to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and management of the condition.
