A female condom is a contraceptive device that provides protection against both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It gives women control over their own sexual health.
Female condoms are soft, flexible pouches made from nitrile or latex. They have two rings—one at the closed end that helps with insertion, and one at the open end, which stays outside the body during intercourse.
The condom is inserted into the vagina before sex. The inner ring at the closed end is pushed inside to hold it in place, while the outer ring stays outside, covering the vaginal opening.
Once in place, it lines the inside of the vagina and acts as a barrier to prevent sperm from reaching the uterus. This reduces the chances of pregnancy and blocks the transmission of STIs.
Female condoms are around 95% effective when used correctly. They also allow for greater flexibility in terms of control, as they can be inserted up to 8 hours before intercourse.
