The SQ3R study method is an effective reading and study strategy that stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review.
Before diving into the material, quickly skim through the headings, subheadings, captions, and any summaries. This gives you an overview of the content and helps you understand the structure of the material.
Formulate questions about the material based on the headings and subheadings. This helps create a purpose for reading and keeps you actively engaged in the content.
Read the material actively, keeping your questions in mind. Focus on understanding the main ideas, supporting details, and any answers to the questions you formulated.
After reading a section, close the book or cover the material and try to recall the key points and answers to your questions. Verbalizing or writing down what you've learned reinforces your understanding.
Once you've completed the reading, review your notes, highlighting, or annotations. Reinforce your understanding by going over the material, especially focusing on areas that were challenging during the recitation phase.
The SQ3R method is a systematic approach that promotes active engagement with the material, aiding comprehension, retention, and overall study effectiveness.
