Obtain a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university. While there is no specific requirement for the type of degree, a background in finance, economics, or commerce may be advantageous.
- The most common route to becoming an Income Tax Officer in India is by qualifying for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This is a highly competitive exam that includes multiple stages like the Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and an Interview (Personality Test).
During the UPSC CSE Main Examination, you can select the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) as your preferred service. The IRS includes various branches, and one of them is the Income Tax Service.
Once you have successfully cleared the UPSC CSE and chosen the IRS-Income Tax Service, you will undergo training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. After training, you will be posted as an Income Tax Officer.
