Hathras Stampede: “Offering Compensation Doesn’t Make Up For The Lost Lives”

Hathras Incident was a reflection of UP government ‘s refusal and reluctance to avert the loss of precious lives who supposedly came to participate in the religious event presided by one of the decorated baba who earlier worked with UP police. Stampede like situation had erupted on the last day of this gathering costing many previous lives for the lack of inadequate arrangements and preparations at the first instance.

Nobody seems eager and bother to shoulder the blame on their head instead passing the buck unnecessarily pushing and dragging this matter further. Offering compensation everytime such incidents occur is not part of the solution rather an effort should be made to fix the lapses, gaps and loopholes so that a possible and likely repeat can be averted as our governments are not ready to lesson or two everytime we read or hear about such horrendous episodes whether it’s a train accident or a stampede response of the state appears to be lackadaisical as for them victims and sufferers are just purely numbers who are meant to be rescued and compensated.

If this remains the logic than it will too difficult to address and acknowledge the consequences leading to such painful and tragic acts of fatality and casualties. Implementing real changes will require familiarising and acquainting us with the existing ground realities only than our policymakers can press for crucial reforms at the earliest.
