“Math Is Not About Addition Or Subtraction, It’s About Learning To Think”

Q:Where will I use a^2 + b^2 =c^2 in real life?

A: Well an architect , a scientist or designer might, you probably won’t. You might use something that’s built on that principle but not the theorem directly.

So why is mathematics taught to everyone like probably it was only source of knowledge out there? What is mathematics truly about?

It was never about addition or subtraction. Mathematics teaches you how to think. How to use a collection of facts that you know and apply it to the given problem in hand.

I mean isn’t that something we always do and need to do to survive? Even while driving, cooking or speaking. So you know a,b,c and use it form words as per your convenience. Similarly you know Pythagoras theorem and use it to solve the question in an exam.

Some facts are expected of you to be known just like formulae and the problem in hand keeps changing. When the geometry question asks you to prove the following figure is a triangle (for a figure which obviously looks like a triangle), it actually wants you to teach that looks are deceptive, things aren’t what they seem on paper.

That being said soft skills are as important (maybe more) than hard skills. But questioning the integrity of maths the most universal language that we know to understand algorithms is not wise.
