Running fulfills me! Running liberates me! Running rejuvenates me!
I began my running journey to complete a dare, but I stayed on because I was hooked. Actually I have always been impressed by triathletes. Having swum and cycled all my life, I knew the day I would be able to run, I would be on my way to achieving my goal. Time no bar.
So here I am sharing how I started my running, in response to many queries.
How to begin
Running is not rocket science. In fact humans are meant to run, its definitely quicker than walking! But as an adult we are often inhibited by our own imagination and self doubt. No one cares how you run. So just put one foot in front of another as you do in walking, a little quicker, swing your arms, and there you are. Of course in your mind you should have the image of yourself going forth like none other than your running idol! Eliud Kipchoge for instance, the GOAT of running.
At the beginning
Once you begin, Run a short distance then walk a few steps. Repeat. The way to keep rhythm is count your steps, count your breaths or simply go light pole to light pole. Remember to inhale and exhale too. You might find yourself tensing your body, just relax. Begin slow, it’s a run not a sprint.
Once you have started
Once you begin you should be having fun. Even if its uncomfortable in the beginning, as you warm up, and are moving at your comfortable pace, your heart beat and breathing should be relaxed. Your face, arms, back, core, legs, glutes… everything should be relaxed. In fact at the end of the run you should be feeling so good, you are looking forward to the next one.
Preparation
Wear comfortable clothes, socks and shoes. Have adequate water before and a light meal an hour prior. Neither be starving, nor be stuffed with a heavy meal. Definitely do a light warm up and stretches before you begin your run. Carry a small bottle of water and sip whenever you are thirsty.
The best time
Whenever you have the time to spare for the warm up, cool down and the run. Many people prefer the time around dawn, though some swear by their evening runs. All in all, any time that suits you, works for you, is best for you.
Though running is a solo sport, it is very flexible. Running in a group has a lot of advantages. Ideally if you can join a group there will be someone to guide you, someone to answer your questions and someone to help you set and chase your running goals.
Happy running!
