She Came, Stayed And Left: Maa Durga’s Homecoming And Her Farewell

It is again  a year’s wait for Durga Puja and Navaratri for all the devotees. They prepare from months in advance for this festival by doing different things like buying new clothes etc. to welcome Ma Durga in style. Ma Durga comes to earth, stays with all of us for five to six days, and then leaves for her husband’s house on Vijaya Dashami . It is very difficult to bid her farewell but it is inevitable. These five days are full of joy,fun and frolic for all the devotees. From Saptami morning we offer ‘Anjali’ (‘prayer’) to her in the pandal, savour delicious bhog in the afternoon in the pandal and in the evening we enjoy Dhunuchi Naach , a special kind of dance in the pandal.

For Bengalis, Maa Durga is like our daughter who comes to her parent’s house during this time. That is why we celebrate the festival with so much enthusiasm and devotion. During these five days everyone comes together to enjoy the festival. People invite their friends to enjoy the festival with them and also make new friends during this time.

I hope Durga Maa blesses all of us and we see her soon again ie. next year or Ashche Bochor Aabar Hobe !
