A women reservation bill is a welcome step by the centre piling dust for long over lack of consensus as Congress did muster and press hard during UPA times. Though, officially Congress, s position and stand on women, s reservation is quite is clear conceived way back but couldn’t sail through owing to the coalition sharma.
But there are more unfinished questions than polished answers for Modi government failing to conduct decadal census in 2021 as it could have made very clear what percentage and population of women will be directly benefitting from it. A thirty three reservation will be enough for women hailing from SC and ST communities with one third seats already reserved for them in panchayats, nagar pallikas etc.
Why this bill is silent on the representation of women from OBCs will this legislation equally distribute the fruits of social justice, equality and dignity to those who have been socially excluded and marginalized in the backdrop of government, s reluctance in going forward with an social- economic survey getting a sense for this form of affirmative action. Modi government is conveniently ducking these facts for mere electoral compulsions testing their political waters.
Rather than rushing in with it present dispensation atleast should give a thought to many of this bill, s provisions and clauses constituting a special committee. Let there be a clarity of sorts clearing the air around it’s passage and codification as a law probably having far reaching consequences especially in hinterlands where poverty, illiteracy and patriarchy play a crucial role shaping and arranging communal life of women folks in the rural landscape.
I can understand the over excitement and over enthusiasm of Modi ji for a valedictory from the floors of new parliament stressing and emphasizing the potential merits of a pathbreaking legislation making women first amongst equals in every sphere competent striking their reasonable claims for resources.
From a political point of view he definitely would like to reap dividends faltering at the policy front where connecting dots with each other is in itself a tedious task. Complicated than what it appears like for a regime gradually turning to optics, rhetorics and theatrics as a possible way out cutting into the ire and disgruntlement of ordinary electorate forced to fend for itself amidst the economic boom and technological advancement in the age of amritkaal.
Don’t you see how far we have come from where we stood earlier. Satire intended! any conversation on inflation, unemployment etc will seriously jeopardize the ambitious nationalistic project of Modi ji with us the detractors bearing it’s burnt. Alas! our patriotic fervor should remain constant at all costs come what may be the scenario onus is on to abide by it
