Spirit Of Youth

I was an overwhelmed fresher starting my engineering degree in one of the best NITs in India when my friends suggested the movie Chhichhore to me, starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor in lead roles. I initially took it for an entertainment movie about college life, perfect for a fun time pass. But as i finished it i wished i would have seen this sooner.

It was a tale of a parent telling his son about his college years in order to impart to him the important lesson that sometimes failing is okay.

We exist in a society where it is commonplace to put pressure on people to achieve success. We strive to succeed for our future. We strive to make our parents proud in front of our relatives. We strive to push ourselves to the limit today to avoid working hard tomorrow. And if we do succeed, it is great. With a clear path, we are ready to embark on a wonderful journey. But what if we didn’t, though? Are we a lost cause? A disappointment?

Chhichhore is a wonderful movie which talks about this issue in a typical Indian way with added flavors of comedy, friendship and romance. Raghav aspires to attend IIT just like his parents. His father Anni is confident about his son and talks about celebration without realizing the intense pressure his son is experiencing. Results arrive and when Raghav learns that he failed, he attempts to end his life in fear of being branded as a loser. He is shown to be in a depressed state where he loses the will to live.

This is a real issue existing in our society. It has been demonstrated that academic pressure causes students to feel more stressed and anxious, which negatively affects their physical, social, and emotional well-being. The news of students committing suicide after failing competitive exams is extremely saddening.

I still remember the days of my JEE preparation during which I personally witnessed and felt the strain placed on students. After every practice test I would find someone crying about how poor they did or how terrified they are regarding their future.

In Chhichhore, Anni gathers all his college friends in an effort to inspire and motivate his son. They recall how the entire campus labeled them as losers and how hard they tried to break out of it.

If people around you aren’t pushing you to achieve good grades or secure a good job, chances are that you are doing it to yourself. And nothing would seem enough. It happened with me when I pressured myself and believed I was not good enough. Fortunately I have very supportive parents who encouraged me and more importantly who assured me it is ok no matter what the result is.

In the movie, Raghav understood When Anni said

“Your result does not decide whether you are a loser or not, your efforts do and you have tried hard, son.”

And I think that is where the solution lies. Parents and teachers should be made aware of how to provide healthy support to the students. There are many options and choices available in this world and students should be guided to choose careers based on their interests and not on the potential salary packages.

This life we are provided with is short enough to be spending it on others’ choices and long enough to try new things and do what we love.
