Pariyerum Perumal-The Dynamic Shots On The Cruelty Of The Caste System

   #Contest: YKAatNITTrichy

In Tamil movies released in recent years ,I was very impressed by the film PARIYERUM PERUMAL directed by Mari selvaraj .I here wish to share how the film makes impact among the youth on social justice by elaborating the communal disparities and inhuman practices of the society .

STORY LINE – A LIVE SCREEN.

Speaking of the society indulged in vaunting pride of their caste, the inter caste marriages which annihilates them makes the prior cause for honour killing, starts the film.

In the age of enjoying the last phase of life the killer old man who believes killing those who loves cross by caste as his prime duty to god , the parents turned to be the soul cause for their daughter’s execution to preserve their caste’s pride ,threaten us about the dominance of one’s so called higher caste over the other.

Amidst the chaos the film relaxes with the innocence of Pariyerum Perumal ( Kathir )who enters law college to pursue his studies. There comes the female lead Jothi Mahalakshmi (Anandhi ) who develops courtesy and kindness towards him and agrees to help with his struggles in English. By accepting her invitation he went to attend her family marriage function, where he experienced outrageous insult by being pissed on by the girls’ brothers. The greatness of Pariyan in veiling all the bitter incidents from Joe and in taking the mighty sword called education to conquer these inhuman acts highly qualifies Mari selvaraj’s direction. He further implies his quality direction by breaking the stereotypes of hero that he portrays Pariyan as a person next door .The testimony of the standard picturisation is confirmed when the shock and humiliation stick to the audience when Pariyan was forced into girls restroom in the college by Joe’s brothers. This kind of atrocities continues throughout the film. Apart from being a story it exactly depicts the real life problems.

This is when Pariyan’s father appears for the enquiry about his son regarding the complaint against him as he entered the girl’s restroom voluntarily. Pariyan’s father is a folk artist who disguise as a female dancer during performance. The disgusting act of the antagonistic students by undressing his father chased him out to the road symbolizes the cruelty against the depressed. At a point Pariyan was in situation to pass through the emotional rope between Joe’s affection and his self respect.

THE CLASSIC CLIMAX :

Afraid that his daughter’s love may extend beyond the limit , Joe’s father arrange the killer old man to kill Pariyan. That killer old man figures out a plan to turn the murder into an accident and move accordingly. He fooled Pariyan and brought him to the railway track beaten him up till he collapsed , made him lie on the track and framed him as a unconscious drunkard. But to make this all in vain, the soul and love of his deceased dog Karuppi gently floats towards him in the air as a blue breeze and caressed him ultimately saved him. Once he escaped from the train they again conflicted and though he had the chance to kill the killer old man, he let him survive.

When he was about to leave the place the girl’s father and brothers arrived. Pariyan came to know that the vengeance of her father was not only because of his daughter’s love but also of the untouchability that has been passed to him throughout the generations. As a sign of breaking the chain of untouchability Pariyan broke the car glass and asked the girl’s father “What bothers you? ,if it is my education that bothers you I will study, if my existence bothers you I will live!”,which beautifully explains the core of the film.

The noble heroism of Pariyan to break the usual expectation of the audience by not actively involving in quarrel with the girl’s father and brothers and just defending himself is a poetic depict.

DIALOGUES – THE WORD POWER:

1 : (Scene ) a gang of oppressed youngsters sitting besides a pond leave at once they see another group of men of dominating caste approaching the pond.

“They own our fields and all we have is hunger; only on the day we stop owing ourselves to them, our dawn will bloom!”whimpered one of them which clearly portrays the miserable socio economic status of India.

2 :(scene) during the enquiry of the complaint against him the college principal shares that, ”Me, son of a cobbler is your principal. I too have faced many suppressions in life. Did I quit? No. I bounced back with double the force. Those who oppressed me back then is praising me now. Overcoming all these troubles you should win.” His graceful words shows that not all will ruin us, some really wish for our success.

THE DIRECTOR’S TOUCH:

Karuppi’s(Pariyan’s pet dog) funeral was new to Indian cinema.

• A single jasmine wavers between two tea cups – the girl’s love which bridges the peak and the base.

Pariyan’s angel- his view for girls was respectful

Anand (belonging to higher caste, friend of Pariyan)- there still exists people who see others by character not by birth.

SYMBOLIC APPROACHES :

• In the song “Who am I? (Naan yaar)”,the shots are very symbolic. The snakes and the animals reflect the cruelty of the communal hierarchy.

• The running of the warm-ups of the hero reflects the struggle to win.

• The jeans and the anklets of the hero in the song reflects the basic tradition and aiming to rise.

IMPACTS:

• The youth of modern days came to know the cruelty of the caste system and have developed a motive to eradicate it.

• They learned that the education is the only weapon to overcome all the social barriers like castes.

• The character of Pariyan has been constructed as a noble one bearing all the shame played on him,to get the respectable position in the society with tremendous tolerance.

From the above mentioned points I conclude that the film Pariyerum Perumal greatly inspires the youth in all aspects.
