Thaksin Shinawatra

Thaksin Shinawatra is a Thai business tycoon and a politician served as Thailand PM from 2001 to 2006 before being ousted from seat of power in a military coup with his Pheu Thai Party having strained ties with the military establishment. Endorsing his close aide Srettha Thavisin,s appointment as Prime Minister who will be leading the coalition alliance, Shinawatra seems to establish credentials of his party as an alternative to the mainstream.

Accused of corruption and fraudulent practices by traditional and conservative political parties, Shinawatra stood to the ground promoting welfare schemes and measures popular in the north and north east region of Thailand creating a loyal and vocal I support base. Something which irked, intrigued and annoyed the mainstream political parties who charged Shinawatra as being a loath to the monarchy leading to his subsequent downfall and a loss of political capital.

Spending fifteen years in self exile Shinawatra explored the available avenues for strengthening Phew party that eventually paid dividends. Arrested immediately upon landing in Bangkok with dozens of cases related to corruption scandals pending against him his homecoming has signified a new dawn for Thai politics which until now was crumbling and cracking if at all Shinawatra can steer it’s direction.
