As we step into 2023, it’s disheartening to witness that the fight for equality and recognition of LGBTQIA+ couples in India continues. Queer couples currently lack a proper avenue to include their partner’s name in the nominee section. Despite the landmark decriminalization of same-sex relationships by the Supreme Court in 2018, queer couples still face significant hurdles, especially when it comes to obtaining term insurance. This blog sheds light on the discriminatory practices within the insurance industry with a personal experience with term insurance and the urgent need for inclusivity beyond just a month of celebration.
Term insurance plays a crucial role in ensuring financial security for individuals and their loved ones. Unfortunately, many insurance providers in India adhere to traditional definitions of marriage and family, denying coverage and benefits to queer couples. Most term insurance advertisements portray only heterosexual couples, perpetuating the erasure of LGBTQIA+ relationships from the mainstream narrative.
Personal Struggles and Rejection
A heartwarming gesture of trying to register my partner as a nominee for term insurance turned into a series of rejections and disappointment for us as a gay couple. Multiple insurance companies outright dismissed the idea or remained silent in response. Some even cited homophobic reasons, stating that they do not encourage gay people for any services. The absence of legal recognition for same-sex marriages further complicates the matter, leaving queer couples with no option for securing joint policies or beneficiary designations.
The discriminatory practices within the insurance industry deprive queer couples of financial security and perpetuate societal stigmatization. By excluding LGBTQIA+ relationships, these companies send a message that such unions are lesser and unworthy of acknowledgment.
The Path to Change
Thankfully, there are activists and organizations working tirelessly to promote inclusivity and recognition within the insurance sector (e.g. Health Insurance for Queer couples). Their efforts focus on advocating for policy reforms that embrace diverse relationships and ensure equal access to term insurance for queer couples. Additionally, raising awareness and sensitization within the insurance industry can help eliminate discriminatory practices and foster a more inclusive environment.
However, the struggle faced by queer couples in obtaining term insurance in India serves as a reminder of the urgent need for legal, societal, and institutional changes. It is time for the insurance industry to break free from outdated norms, acknowledge diverse relationships, and respect the rights and well-being of the LGBTQIA+ community throughout the year. By doing so, we can move towards a more equitable and inclusive society for everyone.
