Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said it could easily have been renamed the Nehru Memorial Prime Ministers’ Museum to be all-inclusive without seeming to demean the maverick of the original. There always remains some significance in respecting the past. His broader standpoint aims to maintain the name of Nehru with the 59-year-old memorial. Though some have also said if Pradhan Mantri Sangrahlay exists, the necessity to reverse the older name of NMML holds no marked essence. But why should we cry hoarse at it?
What was proposed in the year 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has come to have been fulfilled after about seven long years. The idea of setting up a museum dedicated to all the prime ministers of India at the Teen Murti premises becomes a fact. This project was approved by Executive Council, NMML in its 162nd meeting held in November 2016.
Having long sought to put a practicable alternative name to Nehru Memorial at the tip of the hour, our top leaders eventually decided to omit his name and steer up with the changed name of the memorial. The culture ministry had earlier announced that they have reportedly decided to rename NMML to Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society.
For over 59 years Nehru Memorial Museum and Library has been an international intellectual landmark and treasure house of books and archives. It will hence be called Prime Ministers Museum and Society. After extensive discussion, approving a new name in the input has been settled. Nehru’s name dropped out to frown upon his inkly incredible legacy.
Though some are putting forward concerns about this quickness in initiating the change just for achieving electoral success in the coming year. How can Nehru’s existing level and status be distracted and lowered? How can the huge contribution of Nehru ever be lessened? He was ably represented as the architect of modern India.
A lot of people can not forget that he was our county’s first PM until the will of the ruling party sidelined him. It is no longer an obstacle to a party seeking benefit by only reversing the name. People are more likely to see him as an empathetic figure. However, opponents describe Nehru as an allele prime minister.
