The Ongoing Wrestlers’ Protest Reflects The State Of Our Democracy

Crackdown on protesting women wrestlers in the national capital on the day of inauguration of new Parliament building is another attempt to muzzle and seize spaces for people,s resistance against an executive turning highly susceptible, cynical and critical to any build-up challenging it on its turf. Maybe for this fact, centre has stayed back from acting in haste against Wrestling Federation of India President Brijbhushan Singh primarily accused by Phogat and Sakshi Malik of sexual overtures, harassment and intimidation. Constituting a high-level probe committee could have been a natural reaction under pressure but on the contrary there were many flip flops in the manner in which this matter was treated and tackled. Should the wrestlers bear the brunt for the laxity on the part of those tasked with the mandate to govern the day-to-day sporting affairs? Pinning the blame on them by pressing charges against them manhandling and robbing them of their dignity speaks volume of the barbarity and cruelty inflicted against them for standing and calling out the oppressor. Ahhh. tough times ahead for our democracy!!!!
