Sweet Nothings : What Is Enough In Life?

An old man recieves a cheque from a younger man. They all look happy. There are others in the background who are clapping. It is a still from the series Better Life Foundation.

“What is enough in life, my friend?”

“Nothing is ever enough in life. We spend all our life trying and hoping to find happiness.

Be happy after we’ve completed our schooling. Happy after we’ve gone to college and university and have earned some good degrees. Happy after getting married. Happy after having kids. And happy after we’ve watched them repeat the same wheel.

Right after we have taken our first breath, we probably start being hopeful of getting and achieving things. Things like being able to taste what other family members are having in the ward or being able to walk without falling ten tines on the floor. Or riding that little bicycle with two large wheels and a pair of tiny wheels which don’t really have anything to do with riding it.

We have dreams and hopes and desires as humans and that’s what makes us move forward in life. And find happiness. That’s exactly what we’re living for initially.”

“But then what’s the point of living a life when we can’t have enough things?”

“We’re living for the hope of it all.

At first, when we’re kids and to some extent teens, we expect that it’ll all end well. That we’ll always have everything we’ve ever dreamt of. Be it grades or acing in something else.

But as life moves forward, as time moves forward like sand grain dropping in an hourglass, we start to understand this.

That nothing will ever be enough.”

Don’t you think you’d be happy if you had enough of it all?

“Well.. yes..”

“No, right? The wholesome of having it all itself is quite hollow.

The moment you had everything you’ve ever wanted, you won’t feel like doing anything and you’ll start being lethargic.

After a while, that wholesome will rot everything else. It’ll slowly extract that true essence of happiness you used to find in everything.”

“Hmm…”

“Wanting has always been enough. That’s something I can say at this point.

Having all these dreams and desires is the reason why you wake up at dawn everyday after having a low, not-so-quite-great-day – exhausting day. You’re still ready to have another exhausting day with the hope that it might be good. And that’s what makes you move on the pavement of success.

But it depends on what and how you think of what is or what is not enough in life.”
