At the time of the Chinese invasion, on this day, November 18, 1962, the glory of the war at the Rezang La Post located on the snowy peak of Ladakh is unique from the wars that have taken place in the world so far.

In this war, out of 124 soldiers of the then 13 Kumaon Battalion, 114 soldiers were sacrificed. These soldiers killed 1300 Chinese soldiers and forced about three thousand soldiers to retreat. The situation was not favorable for our soldiers from the plains.

We were also 19 in arms. The testing time came on the night of 17th November, when due to the storm, these soldiers, who were holding the front on the snowy peak of Rezang La, lost contact with the battalion headquarters.

The war started at four o’clock in the morning on 18th November in the midst of odd circumstances, but no one could get the information about it.

This pass is located 11 kilometers south of Rezang La Spangur Gap, situated at 18,000 feet, from where on November 18, 1962, at 4 am, about two thousand Chinese soldiers attacked 120 soldiers of Charlie Company of 13 Kumaon under the leadership of Major Shaitan Singh. did. 114 soldiers were martyred in this battle.

All the soldiers were residents of southern Haryana. These brave soldiers fought to protect the country in the bitter cold. Despite the lack of old weapons and ammunition, the brave soldiers not only stopped the Chinese soldiers from moving forward, but also succeeded in saving the Chushul airport.

The brave soldiers fought with the enemy soldiers under the leadership of their Major Shaitan Singh and fought in such a way that even the enemy army had to say that they suffered the most loss at this place.

The Chinese army trembled in front of the heroism in the war on the 18 thousand feet high post.

Honoring the gallantry shown at the Rezang La post, the Government of India posthumously awarded the country’s highest gallantry award medal Param Vir Chakra to Company Commander Major Shaitan Singh, while eight other soldiers of the same battalion were awarded Vir Chakra, four with Sena Medal and One was given the honor of Mention in Despatch.

The Commanding Officer (CO) of 13 Kumaon was decorated with the AVSM.
