Dalit Atrocities In Telangana Have Only Increased Over The Years

Dalit atrocities in Telangana under KCR. After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana formed as a new state comprising 54.3 Lakhs dalits in it out of 3.7 crores total population (2011 census). Dalits are around 15% of the total population in Telangana.

But the average crime rate against Dalits varied from 25% to 30%, and a large chunk of cases are unreported. A total of 12,643 Dalit atrocities happened in Telangana under K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s tenure (NCRB DATA from 2014 to 2021). I am attaching some of the major news.

In 2014, the state government gave homestead land in Pathapally village, 150km from Hyd, to Dalit families from the neighbourhood. But in early May, the village’s 400-strong Boya community drove them out and began burying their dead on the plot to prevent the Dalits’ return.

In a case of custodial death in Telangana, Seelam Rangaiah, a 53-year-old Dalit man arrested for allegedly hunting wild animals, was found hanging in the toilet of a police station in Peddapalli district.

The lawyer-couple who filed a petition before Telangana High Court demanding a probe into the allegation of the custodial death of Rangaiah, a Dalit man who was arrested under the charges of poaching wild animals were murdered in daylight. They sought police protection but denied it.

Ms Nagamani informed that ever since the said permission to file the counter to the Report was given to her, both are constantly being harassed by the police, both at Manthani and in Hyd. She also complained that her husband is being falsely implicated in two FIRs.

Bharat Reddy, a local BJP leader, committed this attack by insulting Dalit youths Rajeshwar and Laxman of Abhangapatnam village. This incident happened in October 2017. They not only abused them and beat them but also forced them to drown them in the sewage water and apologized.

The socially boycotted families said that there has been no development in their area and that the Panchayat funds were not being used to construct drains in the Dalit locality. They urged the UC village development committee to treat them as human beings and integrate them.

G Narasimha, a Dalit farmer, was killed when he tried to resist illegal sand lifting from his farmland in the Mahabubnagar district. He was mowed down by the lorry, which was used for sand lifting. The district police have registered a murder and illegal sand mining case.

Dalit minor girl (14) was assaulted for several months in 2020, and her condition became critical. She died on Aug 12 due to severe infections in her urinary tract and multi-organ failure. Medical reports had also confirmed that the girl was subjected to repeated sexual assaults.

Dalit residents of Guvvalegi village, in northern Telangana’s Siddipet district, tried to install a statue of BR Ambedkar at a central spot in the village. The Mudiraj demand for a Ganesha statue reflects the spread of Hindutva politics among some OBC communities in Telangana.

A 25-year-old woman from being converted into a ‘jogini’ or the victim of an illegal practice that pushes women into sex slavery under the veil of faith. The woman is a member of the Madiga community, which is classified as a Scheduled Caste (SC) in Telangana.
