Opinion: Why Politicians Should Refrain From Making Religious Statements

Former union Minister Shivraj Patil’s statement comparing Gita with Jihad has stoked massive outrage and controversy with the ruling BJP and right wing groups condemning and mocking Congress’s pseudo secularism appeasing a particular community as a votebank for clinging to power.

I maintain that leaders should exercise restrain and constrain themselves from directly speaking and saying anything on issues related to religious practices, propagation and rituals as this sometimes may go out of bound references like Saffron terror, Hindu baiter and basher etc getting misplaced everytime the Congress tried its hands in distinguishing between secularism and communalism as there remains a thin line of separation between personal and political in a country like India where religion is but a part and parcel of one,s conscience and existence a characteristic which can’t be rubbished like many progressive liberals claiming it to be partial and not complete unlike them Congress should come out clean of such erring and embarassing episodes proving detrimental to it’s electoral and political extension and expansion with the right playing it down to the gallery grand old party needs to be wary of such attempts and agendas which would only make BJP become a central pillar of Indian politics with the opposition in a delusion and dilemma shattering all options and opportunities of an alternative taking on the ruling regime head on.
