Calling the crime against women just a crime is not justified as this causes physical damage and snatches and ruins women’s dignity. Nirbhaya case is historically a landmark case that founded the ground of women’s prestige by convicting criminals for this heinous crime. Afterwards, the government established a nirbhaya fund. In 2013, the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance 2013 was promulgated by President Pranab Mukherjee, and several new laws were passed.
Similarly, many states began working toward protecting women’s life and dignity. The Government of Karnataka announced the launch of a 24/7 dedicated helpline (1091) to be operated by the state police to register sexual abuse complaints from women. The Government of Tamil Nadu also announced a 13-point action plan, etc
The Reality Check
As many as 65,025 rape cases were reported in 2021. The number of rape cases in 2020 was 28,046, while 32,033 in 2019. So in just three years, more than one lakhs cases were registered for rape. So average can be concluded that India lodged an average of 86 rapes daily and 49 offences against women per hour in 2021. The source of this data is the National Crime Records Bureau. Therefore it’s pretty rational that there are ample cases that are not registered. Thus post nirbhaya has sequentially several lakhs of Nirbhaya.
Where we lie on the deathbed of inhumanity, ignorance, and moral anarchy.Way ahead of rape cases has multiple aspects strict enforcement of the law, sexual awareness, and political liberation.Enforcement of solid laws is needed against rape cases, a women’s wings in the police station, a very speedy process to register the case against the person, a separate medical stream for medical checkups and care, a women-friendly investigation, and finally, a fast track tribunal judgement, however, the accused can file PIL against the sentences.Sexual awareness is the key to dealing with this crime; so many very young children don’t even know the differences between touch digital rape, close relatives rape etc. are examples.
Political liberation involves the right to vote, participation functioning of the governance etc., which might give a voice to the voiceless.Crime against women is a black spot in Indian society. Thus we need to eradicate such immorality from the bhumi of devi (land of goddesses)
