Love In The Times Of Revolution: ULFA Leader’s Daughter Gets Married

Banya Barua, daughter of Anup Chetia, the founder of India’s banned organization United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), is married to Anirban Chowdhury of Bangladesh. They got married on September 30 at Jerigaon in Assam’s Dibrugarh.

Anirban Chowdhury and Banya Barua fell in love while studying in an educational institution in Bangladesh. After that they got married. Jerigaon Anup Chettiar village of Dibrugarh. This information is known from a report of Indian media Deccan Herald.

Deccan Herald reports that while Anup Chetia was incarcerated in a Bangladesh jail, his daughter Banya Barua was studying at the Mastermind International School in the capital, Dhaka. Anirban Chowdhury is a student of the same educational institution. There is their identity. They are involved in a love relationship from acquaintance. After that they got married.

Anup Chetia belongs to the Matak ethnic group of Assam. The formalities of the matter have been completed following the custom of Matak group. A wedding ceremony will be held in Melbourne, Australia on November 25. Anirban Chodhuri is a son of Comilla, Bangladesh. Currently he lives in Australia. There will be a wedding ceremony in the presence of two family members.

In 2015, peace talks were initiated between the Central Government of India and ULFA. Anup Chetia was arrested in Bangladesh at that time and was in jail. That same year, Bangladesh handed over Anup Chetia to the Indian government. This marriage took place after about seven years of that incident.

About the wedding, Anup Chetia told Deccan Herald last Thursday, ‘I didn’t know anything about their love while I was in jail. But we have love and respect for the kind help that the people of Bangladesh have given us in our revolution. There is no objection to this marriage.

Meanwhile, the marriage of Anup Chetia’s daughter with a Bangladeshi youth has raised several questions. This question is specifically about the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA. Many are questioning whether Anup Chetia has taken a stand in favor of recognizing Bangladeshis as legal citizens of Assam.

According to Deccan Herald’s report, the United Liberation Front of Assam-ULFA was formed in Sibsagar district of Assam in 1979 to prevent illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. According to Wolfa, tribals in Assam are facing crisis and problems due to illegal immigrants. For this they formed ULFA. After that, when the Indian army’s operation started in Assam, top leaders including Anup Chetia fled to Bangladesh. ULFA established camps in Bangladesh and carried out activities in Assam. Anup Chetia lived in Bangladesh for about 28 years. Anup Chetia was arrested in 1997 from a house in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. He was handed over to India under a prisoner swap deal in 2015.
