Mr. Kapil Dev said in a recent program, that he doesn’t understand what pressure and depression is, and if you love what you do, you could never loose the passion for it. This is problematic, especially in a country where mental health awareness is so low.    I understand his intentions were pure but in the way he has fed into the notion that mental health issues of facing too much pressure and depression is not a real thing is harmful.

People are still fighting to be understood and to get proper mental health care. Times are different right now, in the case of Indian cricket, a huge fandom did exist and you could hear the criticism people shoot at you but not in the level in which people do it in this social media era where every word spoken by an angry population can be heard and felt strongly. The schedules the present Indian cricketers have to go through is really hectic and much draining than the past cricketers had to face.

In the case of students and the education system today, in the past students weren’t expected and literally ordered to score the highest marks and to strive for careers they are not interested in as it is done today. All these reasons kill the passion of students and cricketers from what they are expected to do.

I do agree with one point of his, which I think is the root cause of the problem, the problem is that people don’t love what they do anymore and the reason why they can’t enjoy what they do is due to many external reasons as stated above. I really respect him for having faced all those times with huge strength as i believe, being a captain of the Indian team is never a easy feat but his words have really caused a lot of harm and must be unlearned both by him and the people of India.
