Ayushmann’s ‘Doctor G’ Hits All the Right Notes And Is A Must-Watch

Some spoilers ahead!

Plot:

This movie is a satire on the male gaze, male touch and the patriarchal setup prevalent in our society. It also raises the question of whether doctors are divided by their gender. Here, Ayushman Khurana is an MBBS graduate who wants to get into the orthopedics department but ends up in gynaecology because his rank is low for orthopedics.

“Jo cheez mere paas hai hi nahi, usska ilaaj main kaise karunga?” is a dialogue he says at the start when he gets into the “Stree Rog Vibhag” i.e., Gynaecology Department. He wanted orthopedics so badly because he thought it was something that ‘suits a man’, unlike gynaecology.

There’s a particular scene where Ayushmann happens to deliver his first baby, to which the women of the department celebrate him. When the HOD looks at the ongoing celebration, she schools everyone celebrating, saying, ‘Were the female doctors celebrated for their doing their first delivery, and is he getting this special treatment for just doing his job because he’s a man and it’s unusual?’

The second half of the movie touches on topics like how the consent of a minor doesn’t matter. It’s still rape. The transition from the hilarious movie to talking about the importance of consent, how you’re blindsided in affection etc. (won’t spoil too much) is very smooth, from laughing out loud to thinking hard.

The movie does justice to its theme and is a quintessential Ayushmann Khurrana starter which starts hilariously and ends with a social message.

Acting:

Ayushman is in his element as usual and nailed it. Shefali Shah, as the HOD of gynaecology, is so good. Rakul Preet is just okay, but I feel like her character was unnecessary.

A special mention to Sheeba Chadha as Ayushmann’s mother. She’s the best part of the film, a mom who’s getting dolled up for Tinder dates and asking her son to click her picture because she has to update it on tinder too. So funny. She’s a star!!!

Rating:

I would rate it a hard 8/10. It was what I expected it to be, had fun. If you want to watch a movie to break the monotony. This is it. Go watch it now.
