What Makes Me Happy As A Teacher?

Someone today asked me “Tum Khush Ho??” For that time instantly words came out of me was ” Aaj ke date me kaun khush hai” but is it really true? Is there no one who is really happy? These questions sounds really depressing.

Let us first understand what happiness is, I am not a philosopher or a writer that I can explain it but still for me happiness is a “perception” “a state of mind”. According to Yuval Noah Harari, who describe happiness very beautifully by relating it to meanigful life as follows:

“The scientist who says her life is meaningful because she increases the store of human knowledge, the soldier who declares that his life is meaningful because he fights to defend his homeland, and the entrepreneur who finds meaning in building a new company are no less delusional than their medieval counterparts who found meaning in reading scriptures, going on a crusade or building a new cathedral.”

So, happiness is a perception which is always different for different person, and I feel people can be happy if they enjoy what they do.

For me as a teacher I find happiness in following:

As a teacher when I enter into a classroom and students loudly wish me with a “good morning” or “good afternoon” by seeing their happy faces, the innocent smile, the excitement to welcome me into the classroom I find happiness, by seeing their excitement I feel like “yes today they are ready to learn”

I find happiness when after a class students ask questions one after other, I feel when they ask questions it means they paid attention in the class and my class was interesting.

I find Happiness when students stay back after a class just to share their problems in learning or personal, at that moment I feel like they have not only accepted me as a teacher but as someone whom they can rely on and I feel, great teachers really great not only beacuse they teach really well but beacuse they are well accepted by the students. Here let me put forward a simple question ” Who is your favourite teacher and why?

I think for most of us a teacher is favourite not only because he/she teaches us really well but because he/she understand our problem really well and always provide us with a suitable solution whenever we approach them.

For me as a teacher my happiness is always related to satisfaction of students on daily basis, someday when something goes wrong I get frustrated and someday I am the most happiest person. And I think that’s the beauty of teaching, you get a chance everyday to work for the betterment of students. I also feel teaching is a way when work so closely with the innocent young minds whom you shape the way you want. And in this materialistic world when there is no value for feelings and relationships, teaching is the way when you can actually feel the feelings.
