He is our resident nearly 40-year-old actor with considerable life experience but he’s something of a mystery. He’s not on social media, he hardly gives candid interviews. But there’s a reason he’s mysterious. It’s because whenever he opens his mouth, he says something that will inevitably be misogynistic or sexist. Don’t believe me? Here are some examples below.
1. “Well, I Can Say Somebody Has Pheloed.”
The pheloed-gate happened pretty recently and opened the floodgates to bring out all the times Ranbir Kapoor has been problematic af. During Brahmastra’s promotions, he fat-shamed his pregnant wife in front of fans, media and industry colleagues. He apologised for it later due to backlash, but shouldn’t he know better not to call his pregnant wife fat? It’s not a joke if it hurts someone. I am not sure how a partner can be this crass in public.
2. Katrina + Misogyny = Lessons In How Not To Treat Your Ex
This thread does a wonderful job of explaining Ranbir Kapoor’s misogyny. During Jagga Jasoos’ promotions, he kept talking over Katrina Kaif during interviews, not giving a chance to her to respond. And it’s not a one-off incident. He mansplained his way over her throughout the promotions, in a show of toxic masculinity. It was as much her film as his, he couldn’t even afford her the respect due to a co-star.
3. When Ranbir Called Anushka Sharma ‘Anxiety Queen’
During the promotions of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Ranbir Kapoor felt it was his “duty” to reveal that Anushka lives with anxiety, going as far as revealing her medication. Mind you, she did not share this information herself, her co-star did. WTF? Why would he invade her privacy like this? He did this again when he shared that his uncle Randhir Kapoor lives with dementia. Randhir had to issue a clarification later that he was perfectly fine. I am not sure who appointed Ranbir Kapoor as the spokesperson for people’s medical history. Will he announce it too if I get ill?
4. His Not So Funny Prank
Ranbir Kapoor pushed his domestic worker into the swimming pool. Kicker? She couldn’t swim. Neetu Kapoor shared it as an anecdote. He was known to be a troublesome child, but has apparently since grown up. I am not sure. They say there is a childish side to everyone, and that’s true. Ranbir’s comes out as a mean-spirited man who takes pleasure in being toxic to his co-stars and hiding behind the age-old line of ‘I’m just joking’.
I am sorry if he’s your favourite actor, but stanning someone without knowing who they are is disingenuous. I hope he can learn from his gaffes, and deliver better movies than Shamshera.
