Why Is Delhi The Unsafest City For Women In India?

In India’s capital Delhi, two minors were raped every day last year. Delhi is the most unsafe city for women in the country. Such a picture has emerged in the data of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of India. News from NDTV.

There were 13,892 cases of crimes against women in Delhi in 2021. Last year this number was 9782. The number of cases has increased by more than 40 percent in a span of one year.

We know the aftermath of the rape of a medical student in a moving bus in Delhi. After this incident there was a lot of movement all over India. Recently, according to one of the police, four women are raped every day in Delhi, the capital of India. Thus, every 6 hours, 1 woman is raped in the country’s capital. This account is for the last four years.

Hindustan Times reported on Sunday, quoting PTI, that the police have shown a picture of crime against women in New Delhi. The police presented this picture as a case registered in the police station between 2012 and 2015. Four women have been raped every day in the last four years. At the same time, nine women were humiliated or harassed.

In these four years, the number of rape cases has increased almost threefold. In 2012, the number of rape cases in the police station was 706. This number has tripled in four years. In 2015, there were 2199 cases in the police station. 1636 in 2013, the number of rape cases in the following year stood at 2166.

According to police data, the number of rape cases has increased six times in the last 15 years. In 2001, there were 381 cases in the police station, in 2015 there were 2199 cases. In 2015, there were 1,120 cases registered at the police station from January to mid-July. From January to mid-July this year, the number increased by 66 to 1,186.

According to the police, in some cases, women are not safe in their homes. The number of dowry cases is increasing day by day. Women are subjected to violence in in-laws due to dowry. Between 2012 and mid-July 2016, 691 women were victims of dowry. In this case, the number of cases filed by women against husbands and in-laws in the last four years (2012 to 2016) was 13984.

In 2012, there were 2046 dowry-related cases at the police station. In the following year, this number increased to 3045. This number increased in the following year. In that year i.e. 2014, women who were victims of torture due to dowry filed 3 thousand 194 cases in the police station. In total, 3 thousand 536 cases were recorded in the police station in 2015. Till July this year, 2 thousand 163 cases have been registered in the police station.

According to NCRB data, 32.20 percent of the total cases of crimes against women in 19 metros were registered in Delhi. A total of 43 thousand 414 such cases were registered in these cities last year.

Mumbai, known as the financial capital, is second only to Delhi in crime against women. 5 543 such cases have been reported in this city. 3127 cases have been registered in Bengaluru which is at the third place.

12.76 percent of such cases in 19 metropolitan cities have been recorded in Mumbai. And in Bengaluru, 7.2 percent cases have been reported.

The capital Delhi also recorded the highest number of cases of kidnapping of women (3,948), torture by husbands (4,674) and rape of minors (833) compared to metros with more than 2 million people. Two minors were raped every day in this metropolis in 2021.

Last year, 136 dowry-related deaths were registered in Delhi. This number is 36.26 percent of the total number of such cases in 19 metropolitan cities.

Apart from this, the data of NCRB has revealed that there were 2 thousand 22 incidents of assault on women last year related to clothing.
