Hamari Pahchan NGO: Saving Lives And Spreading Smiles

It had been rightly said that the joy of giving is the greatest joy of all. Hamari Pahchan is one such organization that has been working tirelessly to uplift the underprivileged through several means and bring colour into the lives of the needy. Despite being registered as an NGO in the year 2015, the origin of Hamari Pahchan goes back to 2012 when the country stood still after the horrifying Nirbhaya Rape case.

Tarun Mathur, founder of Hamari Pahchan, worried about his daughter’s safety, pledged to battle the various evils plaguing our society. He collaborated with Delhi Government and installed CCTVs around the city which started his journey of social welfare and eventually led to the birth of Hamari Pahchan NGO.

Hamari Pahchan is not limited to helping a single group or community. Their reach goes to people of different ages, identities, and backgrounds. The NGO is ever-expanding. Multiple ongoing projects cater to many women, children, and the elderly. They set up health camps and help provide basic healthcare to the poor. The NGO has also sponsored the education of hundreds of children and empowered women by encouraging and developing their talents. Their vision is to help people stand on their feet and create an identity, a ‘Pahchan’, for themselves by uplifting them and providing them with the necessary support and resources.

I interned as a volunteer for Project Hunger which worked towards eradicating hunger in India. Thousands of children die of hunger in our country every day. Hunger and poverty have always been major problems in our country but the pandemic took a severe toll on the livelihood of a lot of people, especially the underprivileged. People lost their jobs and had no resources to feed themselves and their families. This is when Hamari Pahchan stepped in to provide healthy and nutritious meals to the needy and poor in the slums of South Delhi. The volunteers campaign and collect funds which get utilized in drives set up for the food distribution.

Food surely is a necessity but for those who have felt the anguish of not being able to fulfill the hunger of their families, it means the world to them. The kids who yearn to have a meal before bed are delighted. The joy in their eyes and the sparkle in their smiles make it all worth it.

Hamari Pahchan is not just an NGO, it is one big family and we get to see how the efforts of so many people make the dream come true. I hope more and more people are encouraged to do their part and think about the welfare of all sections of the society. I feel immense pride knowing Hamari Pahchan is now making a name, a ‘Pahchan’, for itself and surely will continue to grow to make this country and our world a better place. Truly grateful to be a part of such a noble cause.
