Hey guys, I just watched the movie today, so here’s a review no one asked for. Mind you, I’m not a professional critic; sorry in advance if it won’t make sense. This is all my personal opinion!
Plot
The first half of the movie was just a typical comedy, much like Good Newwz, and the second part is where the drama heightens. I don’t have much to say about the story. It was average but had some good scenes, mainly from the actresses. You can relate to those scenes.
They did a good job portraying the family, though not many family scenes. However, it’s hard to see Neetu-Anil as a couple compared to seeing them as parents, but as per the story, that’s a good thing too. I also liked how the two couples mirrored each other (and something Neetu said too). It brings to light some marriage problems, and those parts were depicted well. Some scenes did make me laugh and empathetic toward the characters.
Acting And Characters
Varun Dhawan: Varun’s acting is familiar and consistent with what we’ve seen him do before, playing an over-the-top character who’s confused throughout. He also has the majority of screen time. His character is a typical Indian man who thinks he’s progressive but clearly has issues, but there is a redemption arc for the character, which I thought was fast-paced. Overall, Varun takes up most of the screen time but, in my opinion, is the least interesting character. All our boy did for most of the movie was gatekeep, gaslight and girlboss, lol.
Kiara Advani: Kiara was actually above average to almost good. Her character is a good balance between headstrong yet empathetic. There is one scene (after the interval) where she shows good skills but is not consistent, hence why I think she’s above average at best here. But, overall, her character was one of the more interesting ones, and I wish we saw more of her. She’s a semi-flowerpot, I guess.
Anil Kapoor: Anil continues to play the jolly uncle from Mubarakan, but this time he’s a married man and father of two. Probably my least favourite character. He barely has any redeeming qualities. But at the same time, I could see his perspective on marriage. However, the character’s antics completely overshadowed any sympathy I could muster. I don’t have much else to say about him except that Anil played him well, except for the moving parts, but that’s mostly due to the character being meh, IMO.
Neetu Kapoor: Neetu has very little screen time in the first half, but she has some great scenes in the second half. Her monologue was heartwarming, and you may be able to relate with her (especially the older generations). I loved her ending, though. Even with the screen time she had, she gave an impactful performance.
Manish Paul: The over-the-top best friend and brother; he was average, with not much to say.
Prajakta Koli: She had very little screen time, and her character was all over the place, which isn’t necessarily bad. It was something needed by the character IYKWIM. But Prajakta was below average and not able to convince that on screen. She had a mini monologue herself, which could’ve been impactful, but her emoting was kind of cartoonish. She needed to be a little more subtle.
Tisca Chopra: Probably the only consistent character who knew themselves well enough. I don’t know if they tried to villainise her character or not, but she wasn’t a villain in my eyes. She was good, though not much screen time.
TL;DR
I would give the movie 2.5-3 stars max (and I think I’m being polite with the three stars). It’s nothing special and definitely not a must-watch. However, if family dramedies are your cup of tea, you can watch it but don’t expect much because there isn’t much. Again, I’m no professional, and I’m in no way insulting the actors!
Last thought, there was one song in the movie which I loved, ‘Jaise Saavan‘, and I’m so mad they didn’t release it earlier. I just checked, and they released it 5 hours ago. It’s a waste, honestly (I don’t know if the song’s original or not).
