A Poem On Domestic Violence: ‘The Rose That Breaks’

Domestic Violence

The deadly deceptive rose stares at me
Its rich red petals make all others bow down
Yet it does not bleed as much as the stains on my torn gown
The blue tears on the ribbons are covered for I must stay beneath the sea.

No other hand does my pained hand hold
For my hand only carries thorns
With sea green emeralds and sharp silver, my hair is adorned
The corrupt rose still glows.

I am commanded to cherish the arrogant rose
Idolise its beauty which forever grows
It is so strong that it can never break apart
Once again, the delicate rose breaks my heart.

This is a poem I wrote during Valentine’s season to provide insight on how amidst all the beautiful presents, romantic songs and excitement for Valentine’s day, domestic violence and abusive relationships still exist to some extent.

Through this poem, I spread the message that love should not hurt. The narrator of my poem highlights that although they are holding a pretty red rose and are wearing fancy clothing with expensive jewellery, they are not happy in their relationship.

Throughout the poem, they hint that their partner is abusive towards them, which makes them have a negative perspective on Valentine’s day as well as love in general. They also convey that they are trying to get out of their toxic relationship, but societal views on relationships hold them back.

At the end of the poem, they realise that their relationship is not worth their love and sacrifice.

Valentine’s Day is a special holiday. Many relationships are strong where both partners love and respect each other. At the same time, there are some harmful relationships that we should be aware of because the one who loves you should not hurt you.
