Our Mothers Sacrificed Their Dreams So We Could Follow Ours

Four Indian women stand side by side. The third one from the right appears to be older than the others.

Daughter… Wife… Mother.

Women’s whole life goal is (and therefore, they have been been taught) to live in an environment where they maintain the decorum of build themselves up—to sustain other lives.

What about the girl who is living her life with a lot of burden and the pressure of living in a society with no dreams to call her own.

But yes, she is living for the sake of a goal that everyone wants her to live. Oh yes, of course it’s not me or you, because this is from the ancient Indian times, right?

This is for the girls who have lived in such a society where they are pressurised for so many things, and to follow the norms of the so-called society.

What hits me hard is how someone is forced to kill their dreams. The purpose of these women became: to live their lives as they fulfill the dreams of the society, relatives, parents i.e., those who have been living with stereotypical thinking for years.

This is the society which my mom and maybe yours, or the aunty next door, has survived.

Yes, society is changing now. But, what about those who have killed their dreams just for the sake of the fulfillment of others’ dreams?

I have seen my mom worry about me for days on end. I have seen her worry for my bright future. She gave up on her life for me, so that I could have better career opportunities and therefore, a better life than her.

This is my heartfelt tribute to all the ladies who have killed their dreams for the sake of shouldering the burden of the society’s way of living.

I want a promise from all these ladies to not let what they have gone through their whole lives to be repeated, but to teach their daughters, and allow them to do whatever they want to do with their lives. Let them make you feel proud.

I want to convey my respect and love to all the mothers for the sacrifices they have made. For me, the world has been ruled by the ladies, no one else.
