Trigger warning: mentions of Islamophobia and death

The term ‘love jihad’ has been developed by proponents of the Hindutva ideology. It purports that Muslim men target Hindu women, to convert them to Islam, via seduction, feigning love, deception, kidnapping, and marriage.

Interfaith marriages are a well-established, legal practice in India. According to Article 25 of the Indian constitution (our fundamental right), we have the right to practice, profess and propagate any religion, freely.

However, in my opinion, the freedom of religion is not same as the freedom to convert—if it’s done by using duress or coercion.

We can look at the case of Nikita Tomar, who was killed in a cold-blooded manner by Tauseef Khan. Khan and his friend, Rehaan, had been stalking the 21-year-old. Khan is currently facing life imprisonment.

But, is justice being served? Is there any protection for a middle class family with no political connections?
