The latest movie on Amazon Prime Jai Bhim, starring Suriya, depicts caste atrocities and discrimination in Tamil Nadu. But how will this change the lived realities of the very people it is talking about? Read on to find out more.
Jai Bhim on Amazon Prime recasts the reproductions of atrocities, agony, abuse and brutalities defining and describing the existence of the displaced, dispossessed and despised minorities who are forced to engage in menial jobs safeguarding and sustaining their lives. Do we find any reforms in place for this section of the population, except for the display and depiction of emotions and signs that, instead of promising them empowerment, disempower them socially, politically and economically?
Can there be compensation for their sufferings, counters and casualties that have led to their indifference towards the society and system that, at the first instance, is cynical and suspicious of them?
To begin with, it would have been ideal for the State to chalk out schemes and programmes for the articulation of their core beliefs and concerns as for a development stripping them of their dignity and decorum. Would it be enough to ensure their peace and prosperity for the bottleneck poverty that restricts them and reduces their claims as dutiful citizens?
Reconciling with this reconceptualisation seemingly bothers them as their disagreement and dissent are routinely crushed and calmed by the State apparatus and government agencies. From Bhima Koregaon to Dantewada, any attempt to organise and mobilise them for the fulfilment of basic rewards and recognition is sternly dealt with.
Is this how the State would like to translate their acknowledgement in a society adoring and admiring a consensus on caste and class percolating into pride and propaganda exploited by the social and political elites alike? I truely maintain that such fictional titles are but a reality from which there can hardly be any escape in confronting. However, with absolute conviction and conversation, past prejudices can definitely be mitigated.
