History of Muharram Commemoration

HISTORY OF MUHARRAM COMMEMORATION
Introduction: We are thinking from a long time that how he would give to society the real picture of Muharram. This is widely celebrated by Muslim community. Tajia making is a regular scene among Muslims. They take that Tajia wielded some sharpen weapons towards the Mela. Some of Muslims people form Shee’a groups uses the sharp weapons like blade, knife etc, and they are cutting their bodies with using them. This worst situation and culture of celebrating the Muharram is rapidly spreading over Muslims communities of West Bengal. Some people from Sunni Muslims communities celebrate 10th day of Muharram or Ashurah by fasting before sun rise to sun set. 98% people of Bengal don’t know the real way of commemorating the Muharram but they celebrate that day as a common festival.
Going back to fourteen century on the day of Ashurah in the year of 680 AD, a famous battle occurred between Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad(s)م and a cruel ruler named Yazid bin Muyabiya. Imam Hussain’s message was justice, equality and kindness spread among the people those who loved him. There were of 72 followers with him in that battle of Karbala. Ruler Yazid obstructed the family of Hussain رضي الله عنه to drink water and he tortured them as he could. Lastly Yazid beheaded Imam Hussain رضي الله عنه in Battle of Karbala in 680A.D. Remains members of his family were imprisoned and treated harshly .
This Battle of Karbala occurred in the 10th day of Muharram month, which is known as day of Ashurah. Many Islamic events happened in this memorable day of Muharram. Hazrath Musa عليه السلام escaped from cruel king Firaun. Nooh عليه السلام got down from his ship to land. Yunus عليه السلام came out from big sea fish etc.
The 10th day of Muharram is called Ashurah is an important day for Muslims communities, especially due to the death of our Prophet’s grandson Hazrath Hussain رضي الله عنه by Yazid bin Muwabiya bin Abi Sufiyan. Nowadays this day became a celebration day in present situation among the Muslims communities of some district such as Murshidabad, Maldah Uttar Dinajpur and in Birbhum especially.
DEFINATION OF THE WORD ‘MUHARRAM’
‘Muharram’ also known as ‘Muharam-al- Haram’ is the first month of the Islamic Hijrih Calendar which first started by the second Caliph of Islam Hazrath Omar رضي الله عنه. Allah highly blessed this month and made it one of four sacred months of Allah.
Four months are mentioned as ‘Sacred’ in Hijrih Calendar ‘Muharram’, literally its means ‘Prohibited’. Its sacredness means prohibition of some certain actions in this month. Both the month of Muharram and Allah’s house Al Masjidul Haram originated from same Arabic word ‘Haram’. Both are same in meaning also. So our prophet Muhammad صلي الله عليه وسلم prohibited to his companion and his Muslim Ummah the from fighting with enemies of Islam and doing all bad things.
MUHARRAM AS AN IMPORTANT COMMEMORATION FUCNTION
The Muharram month presents in that four sacred months of Hijrih Calendar. Many miraculous events are happened in this month which is so famous and remarkable in this modern age. Every people keep in mind that events and celebrate that properly. Allah created our father Hazrat Adam عليه السلام and his wife Hazrat Hawwa Bibi عليه السلام in this month. He saved the messenger Hazrat Musa عليه السلام from the oppressor king Firaun in 10th day of Muharram.
In another area, Allah respected this month by providing plenty of features in respect to other months of Hirjih Calendar especially in the 10th day of Muharram named as day of Ashura. Our prophet Muhammad صلي الله عليه وسلمsaid: Who pass that day by fasting, rewards of ten thousands angels will be given to him. There are more features in Quran and Hadith. Then remarkable event in that day is martyr of Imam Hussain رضي الله عنه by oppressor ruler Yazid was son of Muwabiy bin Abi Sufian. Imam Hussain رضي الله عنه fought with Yazid to keep the justice and peace in the word but lastly he is killed by Yazid.
Due to these events and characteristics Muharram become an important commemoration day and celebration month among the Muslims communities. This Muharram is celebrating by all over the world.

Death:
When Yazid bin Muwabiya came to the power after his father passed away in first Rajab month of 60 A.H at the age of 75 years after he ruled 19 years. In a discussion panel to appoint the new Caliph, Some preferred to Abdur Rahman, while others opined someone else. No one called the name of Yazid.
At last Yazid bin Muwabiya become the caliph after his father Muwabiya’s death. But grandson of our Prophet and his followers were not ready to take the oath of allegiance for Yazid. Then Hussain رضي الله تعالي عنه and his followers made compaign against him.
