It is well-known that the word ‘gender’ is common usage is described as the characteristics of women and men that are socially accepted and constructed or assigned at birth. Also, gender characteristics can change over time and vary differently between cultures, whereas ‘transgender’ identity refers to those people who are born female or male, but self-learned to express themselves in ways sometimes different from that assigned at birth and not socially acceptable.
In a country such as India, a majority of the community does not like to live or share their life with the public. This is why they mostly live together to support one another. Mostly, the ordinary public doesn’t want to live with the transgender community in the name of their own self-respect or self-esteem. Somewhere, they still don’t want people to act or react like the transgender community. It can be said that the taboo is set in our minds like a default setting.
Prior or after, the life of them has been stuck or limited to dancing or providing blessings on events of birth or marriage ceremonies. People in villages and cities used to look at them with a different mindset. However, the transgender community has seen many crimes over sexual harassment, bad touch, slang words, passing judgments etc. Walking at night is still a dangerous thing for them. Being aware of all these contexts, we and the government have still have our mouth zipped over this.
But over time, a lot of reforms have been seen and are coming in Indian cities as well as its outskirt. Like other countries, Indian people have also started according them with the right place for what they are entitled to. Well, it can be said or seen in many precedents — from providing them prestigious and iconic places like making them Election Ambassador (Shri Guri Sawant), passing the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019, or designating them with a much deserving place in the heart amongst the people.
But the question to improve the quality of life of them is still in a predicament. Nevertheless, we are still waiting to go further from all these taboos in the minds of the people in this world.
