Assault is a strong word to be used against a man who happens to be one of the Former Presidents of the United States. But, that’s exactly what he did. In more than 200-years long history of the United States, no President has ever delegitimized its elections, undermined its democracy, and asked his supporters to storm the Capitol for his own personal political gains over the gain of the nation – just like a megalomanic.
Trump’s brand of politics has divided people into ideological extremes.
Trump Incited The Attack
Trump’s words led to people being incited into harming the country’s most prestigious institute, especially a country that has advocated for democracy across the globe and has its own people react like they are from a “Third World country”.
The attack on the most prestigious institute of the country by its own very citizen that see themselves as citizens and nationalists are committing a crime that is seditious in nature. While to western-media, it might have been a coup, what we call it in third-world country format – an attack on the Parliament.
Something similar to what Afzal Guru did in the year 2001. But the difference – Afzal Guru never proclaimed himself to be a supporter of India nor did he consider himself an Indian citizen. He was forced to be under the law. He in his own way was plotting with the enemy of the state to overthrow the Indian political class. He was, as a matter of fact, a citizen and believer of the country that was emboldened to attack by a lie of the head of the country.
4 people have died, and America is divided more than ever into the lines of class, religion, race, political ideology, and rural-urban. While one part of the United States that is uneducated, white, old, and living in rural areas has moved to the far-right, the other part of the United States that is educated, mostly colored, young, and mostly living in urban areas is moving to the far-left.
Divisions Among People
Both parts of the country do not seem to see eye-to-eye on any issue, and while civil war might not break out on the streets, a division exists in people’s minds and that is something President Biden cannot fix by just talking about unity.
The United States has put a system in place that has even commercialized the media across the globe. Media, just like any other business, aims to make money and to monetize maximum profit out of their respective channels, newspapers, or online news portals – they all have to favor an ideology or a political party.
Human beings’ political ideologies are not only affected by the media, but by their social, political, and economic environment. The views and beliefs that parents hold reflect on children. Similarly, the opinion you are surrounded by affects your mind as well – it is the opinion, thought-process, and ideology that you consume.
To achieve true unity and make the United States less divisive – Biden needs to pass laws to get the media to follow its true ethics of presenting facts over fiction and not taking any side on the political spectrum. To do so, the media has to get less commercial and more driven by news. What Trump has also done has unleashed unprecedented chaos on the floor of the house by igniting those on the far left and far-right who have lost faith and trust in democracy and politics.
The Need For America To Fix Itself
The idea behind democracy over the years has tampered with, and the rich have found ways to make that political system work in their favor. Donald Trump is the best example of that. Democracy which was supposed to be for the people, by the people, of the people has been reduced to a paper stamp when it comes to favoring citizens.
For Joe Biden, in the next 4 years, the job will to reinstate the United States old position in world politics, get it back on track with its allies, and make the environment less hostile, and that can only happen by eliminating the effect of Trump’s administration from the Oval Office.
It is not going to be an easy task because Trump’s policy is the manifestation of the capitalist overpower that American society and politics had ignored so far. President Biden has to not only address the issue but find ways to make every aspect of the American way of life less commercial, especially in news organizations. Otherwise, Trump’s assault on American democracy will not only stay but escalate soon.
