Neither AAP nor BJP has been able to convince the public opinion on MCD (Municipal Corporation Delhi). BJP says that the AAP led Delhi Government owes 13,000 crore rupees to the MCD. AAP government says that BJP has already siphoned off 2500 crore rupees meant for public welfare and the disbursal of MCD employees’ salaries. In this regard, BJP State President Aadesh Gupta met Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, asking them to bring this impasse to an end.
Though the AAP has called for a one-day special session of the Delhi Assembly on this matter, are we anywhere closer to finding an alternative? I vividly remember how in June 2015, the ‘safai karamchaaris’ (cleaners) of Delhi went on mass strike boycotting work against the nonpayment of their arrears and dues. Did anybody come forward to their rescue instead of indulging in petty politics?
Regardless of Amit Shah’s insistence, BJP replaced sitting councillors with new faces securing its prospects in the civic elections of April 2017. Scoring a two-thirds majority in the civic body polls but for the debutant, AAP succeeding with forty-nine figures wasn’t bad either. A lot has changed from what it was in 2017. Bringing this stalemate to its conclusion should be the top priority for both the Delhi Government and Centre.
