PM Modi’s Attempt To Teach A Lesson On Community Amid Farmers’ Protest

Well, PM Modi has taken upon himself to coach us on morality and ethics by drawing a lesson on community. A lot is being said and stated on his visit to Gurudwara Rakabganj which, for all purposes, was a personal and not a political trip. However, it has the potentiality to deliver a text from its context, as many agitating farmers, mostly from Punjab, are protesting against the passage of draconian farm laws by the Central Government. Who is to be held answerable and accountable? It looks as if the Centre has become immune to these protests and agitations. This immunity became the norm in New India beginning 2014, with Modiji coming to political power at the Centre.

Whatsoever, at least Modiji should warm up to the idea of organising a dialogue with the dissenting farm union leaders instead of switching sides and positions. This has led to bitterness and confusion regarding the farm reforms among farm unions and groups. Those protesting are still unsure of the provisions in the laws and those supporting are doubtful of the laws’ intent. In both the cases, farmers will be at the receiving end as the government has still not included the condition of MSP in the reforms, offering only a “written assurance”.

If the government keeps pressing this legislation, how will it help farmers in double their incomes by 2022? As the PM has been famously defending and quoting in his monologues, my understanding is that the PM should get real and not rhetorical on this issue. As for the lesson on community, it can wait.

Don’t unnecessarily taste their patience in search of alternatives, as repealing might not be on your cards.
