How Men Suffer In A Patriarchal Society #InternationalMensDay

We know so many woman who have been tortured by men, but do we know any Men suffered the same?? Let me tell you about Munish Dalal and his horrible story of suffering and loss. 11th March 2003 was supposed to be the wedding date of Munish Dalal, on 12th March 6.00 in the morning he was behind the bars with his mother Vidya Devi Dalal and His aunt Savitri Devi. Nisha sharma (bride) and her family accused Munish dalal, his Mother and his aunt of demanding dowry. This case got huge national and international media coverage, Nisha sharma became a youth icon in a very short period. She was visited by many reporters for interviews, and politicians who offered her to join their party. Later she got married to Ashwini Sharma in 2003. In January 2004 she and her husband were invited to Oprah winery’s talk show to talk about her bravery and how she stood up to Munish’s family. In the same year when the case was still under trail this incident was included in 6th Std NCRT Textbooks with the title “Man in jail over dowry demand”. Nisha Sharma’s life turned to become A perfect BRAVE GIRL movie. Munish’s Nightmare: After the incidence Munish’s life turned upside down. He spent 2 months in jail, while awaiting trail he was assaulted by fellow prisoners and suffered injuries. 68 years old widowed Vidya devi dalal lost her job as a school teacher in Gov. school, she gave her 36 years to the education department, not just her career ended she lost all her retirement benefits too. Their reputation got tarnished due to the textbook chapter on their name.  She and her relative Savitri devi travelled 71 km to Noida for court hearings for 9 years. In 2012 after 9 years, court acquitted Munish and his family. Munish a 25 yo young engineer lost his job, reputation in society, labeled as a greedy man and most important he lost his 9 years of peace – over a fake dowry case. Facts and Data: According to the NCRB Report a total of 4,05,861 cases of CRIME AGAINST WOMAN were registered during 2019. A total of 3,284,67 Men got arrested out of which only 35,202 men convicted in domestic violence /dowry cases. 26,307 woman got arrested under IPC 498 (a) without given a fair chance of trail.  According to above data every 6 minutes a person is accused of false dowry case and in every 30 minutes a man is accused of false rape case, the numbers are alarming, aren’t they? Another Data from the National Crime Records Bureau shows that on average about 1,00,000 cases are filed under section 498(a) annually. The rate of conviction — where the accusation was proven — varied between 20% in 2011 and 14% in 2015. The conviction rate under all IPC sections was 46% in 2015. According to men, this gap in conviction rate is proof that a large number of false cases were being filed under section 498(a). Journalist and researcher Rukmini Shrinivasan in 2013 analyzed the pattern of rape cases in Delhi’s district courts. In her study, she examined 460 cases that went through a thorough trial in court. Out of these, 109 cases were “promise of marriage”. Only 12 cases resulted in convictions. A Delhi Commission of Women report shows that 53.2% of the rape cases filed between April 2013 and July 2014 in the capital were found ‘false’. Another report from the Jaipur police says that in 2016, it saw an ‘alarming rise’ in the number of false rape cases. Jaipur Police recorded 330 rape cases and of the 276 cases solved, 43% turned out to be fake. Police told the media that women filed these cases to extort money or implicate the accused. In 2016, a total of 38,947 rape cases were reported in India. In 10,068 cases – about a quarter – the women claimed it was rape on false promise of marriage. In Andhra Pradesh state, 45% of all rape cases filed in the past two years fell into the false marriage category. Fair Chance: Rapes are happening and women are being tortured by men, domestic violence is real, but at the same time one should not turn a blind eye to the rampant misuse of sexual harassment laws, Domestic violence laws, and Dowry Prohibition laws. There are many NGO’s working for Men’s Rights but is it enough? Because as soon as the case is registered on a man he is labeled as a perpetrator by society and he loses everything in just a fraction of time. Woman protections laws are made to make a woman feel secure and give her strength to fight the patriarchy, but the same laws have so many loopholes that few women take advantage of them in order to malign someone’s reputation, extort money, or to take personal revenge. Even though the law makers are continuously working to make the laws more effective and less biased but still it’s a long way to go. As a society we should start being more sensitive with men, if Women are victims, men are victims too, perpetrators do not belong to any particular gender. Every man must be given a fair chance to fight back and prove himself innocent without the fear of being tagged as a perpetrator. We should not prove them guilty, before proven guilty by the judiciary.
