TW: Mention of suicide.
The day before yesterday, I was just scrolling and watching videos and posts on social media. Everything was going very smoothly but suddenly I found a post on depression and suicide.
We’ve not even forgotten the unexpected sad demise of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, and we’ve come across a new case of another Bollywood actor, Asif Basra.
Going further, let us first understand the term ‘depression’.
Depression means “a feeling of unhappiness that lasts for a long time. Depression can be a medical condition and may have physical signs, for example being unable to sleep, etc”.
I would say I had been going through it till the last few months amid lockdown. But, Alhamdulillah I have managed to get control over it.
Anyway, let the bygones be bygone. Because there’s not much benefit in discussing the past or future.
As per my observance, what I have concluded is that most of the cases of depression are due to thinking again and again about the future or past. Merely other reasons are as well. And, the point to be noted by a person going through such a mental condition is that there’s not much benefit to think about the future or the past deeds.
Mahatma Gandhi had said, “Your future depends on what you do today”. So, be in the present and enjoy it. Anyway, coming to the point, the case of Asif Basra was shocking enough to let me pen this here.
India is going through a lot of such issues for last many years.
About 800,000 people die by suicide worldwide every year, of these 135,000 (17%) are residents of India, a nation with 17.5% of the world’s population.
There are many reasons for this:
- Loss in business
- Crop failure among farmers
- Failure in exams
- Failure to fulfil the requirements of the family
- Loss of job
- Unemployment
- Failure to accomplish their life goal
- The demise of a loved one
- Cheat in love
- Cheat in property
- Dowry demand
- Failure to fulfil his own basic needs, like, food, shelter, e.t.c.
- Sexual harassment
- Child abuse
There might be many other reasons as well.
But, one of the most emerging depression group in India is found among the students. And it needs special attention.
Every hour one student commits suicide in India, with about 28 such suicides reported every day, according to data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The NCRB data shows that 10,159 students died by suicide in 2018, an increase from 9,905 in 2017, and 9,478 in 2016.
Isn’t it shocking? Students are the nation’s builders. What will be the future of the country? These issues must be raised now in the political arena as it affects a lot of people.
Unemployment, failure to satisfy the others expectation, lack of technology, lack of resources are the very reason find behind these depression or suicide cases. Sometimes, parents and teachers are also responsible, as they always force them to perform extraordinarily in the academic fields.
When he or she would fail to do so, then they would make them guilty and embarrassed by comparing them with the other so-called bright students. And here, the student starts getting depressed. Maybe they are good in other aspects like art, social work, sports, singing, music, dancing, and so on. They should encourage them to do well in their respective interests.
Not only students but this lockdown also made many people go through these miserable conditions like depression especially, the migrant labour class. Indian farmers are also going through such conditions due to the recently passed bill by the ministry of agriculture. Farmers are opposing that but the government has passed.
Narendra Singh Tomar, the Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, must negotiate these issues for the sake and benefits of the farmers. There must be a department at each divisional level to deal with these issues of mental pressure of the people.
If we go through Islamic mythology, committing suicide is entirely forbidden because our life is a gift from Allah. So, I would say that we should always cherish what we have been given from Allah and be optimistic.
Jai Hind!
