Opposition To The Tanishq Ad Makes Me Wonder, Is Religion Still Above Love?

Recently, a controversy gained momentum, concerning an advertisement by popular jewellery brand Tanishq.

People slammed the brand for supposedly promoting ‘love jihad’. The advertisement, in the true sense, meant to promote harmony, love, and respect (बेटियों को खुश रखने की रस्म हर घर में होती है/It’s tradition to keep daughters happy in all homes.), which, to a great extent, was given a wrong tangent by many people, including some big names in our country.

A still from the Tanishq ad that was pulled off air after outrage.

This simple message culminated into a social-media rumpus, taking the issue to a religious clash.

WHY CAN’T PEOPLE NORMALISE NORMAL THINGS?

The debate also drew some big lines questioning interfaith marriages.

This advertisement, though it was just meant to promote a simple and sweet message, through it, people presented an altogether new picture which showed a lack of clarity and acceptance on a thousand different levels. The ad only tried to promote ‘Unity in Diversity’.

It is downright comical how we promote secularism and then show duality in a clear sense.

I support Tanishq and their initiative to put forth a national concern.
