1. First of all, learn to accept the reality. Now here comes the reality which every student in the IMU Kolkata at present can relate to.
2. Back in the 20th century, DMET was hailed as one of the best maritime colleges in the world. The scenario is fully different now.
3. The last nail in the coffin was put in 2008 when the Indian Maritime University was formed and everything was integrated.
4. The curriculum changed, the exam pattern changed and now it has been reduced to just a profit-making enterprise.
5. The present cadets are in a fake misconception that they are studying in one of the best colleges, which is absolutely vague and totally false. Deep in their heart, they know this fact well.
6. Some cadets go on to an extent to title it as ‘IIT-DMET’, to ambiguously compare them at par with the IITians, which in reality they never are. Just compare the entrance examination level, IMU CET vs IIT-JEE Advanced. It’s funny.
7. Nothing is paramilitary here. ‘Paramilitary’ is just a word to fool the outside world that something special training is given to the cadets, which is absolutely false. 8. The uniform is just a piece of cloth for them just to flaunt it on social media, they never earned it as it was there during the time of DMET. Since the uniform is provided to the students without any formal moral counselling and without any proper pledge and promise to safeguard the dignity of uniform at any cost. Thus due to which the dignity of uniform is tarnished and can be clearly observed in a usual day at IMU Kolkata for instance students smoking in stinky colonies nearby with a nasty beard and improper appearance.

Fake Placement Records In Official Websites

Presenting fake data of placements in the DG Shipping website and in IMU Kolkata official website, the college has stooped so low. These data are spread all over the college finding websites (like collegedunia.com, shiksha.com, etc) designated as true, but the truth is that just the 3/4th or 80% students are passed out from this college as unemployed youth to increase the burden on the country as well as their parents.

When you open the present website of IMU Kolkata and open its placement section, you will find the most luring words written depicting a number of companies which come to the college. But except 10% of those depicted, none comes. The college authorities don’t even bother to update the present placement scenario and shamelessly depict the false information and play with the careers of new students.

Due to this false primary source, the new children get to witness false 4-5 out of 5 stars on the renowned college describing portals (like shiksha.com, careers360.com, htcampus.com, etc). The information about the recent companies that came for placement and the number of students they took from the final year batch can be verified through a casual talk with any of the present students of the college. The above-given college portals have most of the comments of seniors who passed out way back from this college are not aware of the present situation, thus they end up unknowingly misguiding them of the present scenario of this college.

New Children who want to get enrolled here, don’t get fooled by the internet, google images or YouTube videos, they are just sour cream on the shattered dreams of unemployment. They may seem good but its a TRAP.

IMU Is Just A Vulturous Profit-Making Enterprise, Greed And Money Making Is In Its Veins

1. The number of placed cadets in the passing out batch is very less than the total number of cadets admitted in the first year batch. The balance is bound to shake resulting in degradation of quality, increase in the money mindedness and greediness of authorities in every situation.
2. The total expenditure of 1 student is normally around Rs 10 lakhs (1 million) in the 4 years of study in college. Many cadets take loans which further amounts to Rs 12-13 lakhs after repayment.
3. Instead of paying this huge amount to a public-funded Central University, at the end of their curriculum, the students here are left unemployed.
4. For the new students who wish to enrol into this college, you better know before that this college has 85% attendance criteria, and the internal marking will be given if only you get 90% attendance. But let me come to the “most important aspect”: the college’s greed for money. The college is so vulturous for money that it takes a penalty of Rs 10,000 if your attendance falls below 80% and even detention of one year if your attendance falls below 75%. And unfortunately, the teachers too to justify it in their classes. Whereas in the rest of India, you will find just 75% attendance in other colleges with some minor penalties.
5. And let me tell you, the point does not end here, after taking your 90% attendance in each semester for 4 years, at the time you pass out, this college gives you NO Placement. The majority of the students remain unemployed and in the end, the authorities will tell you to search for other avenues in the world. Ironically, you spend your 12 hours straight in college activities from 6 am to 6 pm doing your parade, PT, studying marine engines, boilers, compressors and play outdoor games. Do the students get time to study for other avenues? And to hide their failures of giving the majority of them the placements, the authorities very cutely suggest you look for other avenues like government jobs or try in some IT sector (or something like that), etc.
6. Now the hypocrisy and greed of this college came to another level in this pandemic. The college made its students pay for full Rs 1,00,000 in January 2020 with no 30% money-back which is solely for mess or hostel charges. And again, while the students are at home suffering in this pandemic, this perceived ‘government’ college is taking Rs 1,05,000 again for this semester (beginning in September 2020) giving no rebate, and NO Placement.
7. I could call it a modern way of looting. In the past centuries, it was done by dacoits.
8. As a vulture is a scavenger in the birds’ kingdom, IMU Kolkata is one in the college kingdom.

IMU Kolkata Faculties: Mere Salary Collectors

1. The allegiance of teachers of this college is more towards the administration than towards the students. This makes them choose the side of the administration whenever there’s a clash between the interests of IMU Kolkata students and the administration. Though less noticeable, this habit is the most dangerous as it leaves the students alone without any support.
2. The personal interest of teachers here is greater than the student’s interests. Take my words, new students who wish to enroll, you will greatly suffer due to this.
3. The ultimate interest of the students is around 85% Placements from that batch after they pass out, but no teacher even bothers to notice it. Even the students sacrifice their living facilities, their food quality, and many such facilities and lodge no complaint or come forward to face the authorities just in hope of getting placements at the end, but unfortunately, everything has gone and will go ‘in vain’.
4. In order to show increased placements elsewhere, the authorities with the help of teachers maliciously fail a good number of the final year students in order to show that they can’t be counted as ‘total numbers’ since failed cadets are never eligible to sit for placements as per the college guidelines.
5. Adding to voluntarily failing the cadets, the college even charges them a whopping amount of Rs 700 just for rechecking plus around Rs 600 for the re-examinations per subject. The normal examination fees is around Rs 3000 for every student. They have to pay this huge amount even after paying around Rs 2.25 – 2.5 Lakhs fees for the whole year. Do teachers stand against these rules?
6. Leaking out true information is dealt with severe blows and torture from teachers in the form of failure in the exams, voluntarily harassing the students, making them feel isolated. The ‘foolish’ students join this pursuit just to please the authorities which is only an act of fooling their own-selves.

The Psychological Subversion Of Studens In IMU Kolkata

1. The very first day, the training of the first year starts. The first year hostel is like a mock ship where each and every cadet is allotted a room and the Sadan has upper reck and lower reck and each Sadan has a bathroom. The cadets here are trained to become good marine engineers at the end of their college year.
2. The semi-solid clay now has been given in the potter’s (IMU’s) hand with the expectations of parents to see their ward as one of the best marine engineers. Around 10 lakhs is provided to the college to turn their ward into the beautiful dreams their parents aspired. Many go on to take loans and later, it turns out that around 12 lakhs are to be paid back to the bank in future after college.
3. Now the tragedy starts here, according to the Maritime Training Institute manual, for every 85 cadets passing out from college who are placed, the college can induct 100 new cadets to the first year. So that input in the college is roughly equal to the output of the college so that from the students inducted, no one should be left behind during placements.
4. As the IMU Kolkata Campus knows that it cannot fulfil the placement criteria due to its increased intake, now here starts the game of psychological manipulation of the newly inducted first years, who have a very pure dream of perfecting themselves to become a successful engineer placed in a wonderful company with a handsome salary. In the present year passing out batch, around 200-300 cadets were inducted but only few could make up to get placements via college. What about the 150-200 unplaced cadets? What will happen to the majority of those who had taken loans and just after 6 months of passing out, they have to start repaying that?
5. I can say without any doubt that the process of demotivation starts from the class itself. The teachers are not focused in motivating the students, rather they demotivate them by telling the ‘present scenario’ of the shipping industry i.e like – there is a scarcity of jobs “Chappal Ghisne pad jaayenge Mumbai mein” (It will be incredibly hard to find a job).
6. The process of demotivation is done in such a way that if the passing out cadet has passed out jobless, they think that it’s their fault. Rather than blaming the college authority whose job was to induct as many cadets as it can produce output, they start blaming themselves for their present condition.
7. The students here, from the very first year itself, are put in false hopes by their present seniors in college that playing football, cricket or any other event could guarantee their placements. But the real fact is that nothing could guarantee the placements of the passing out cadets from the college, it’s just a matter of chance, luck and more importantly, the JACK to enter in the ’80 placed guys club’.
8. The root cause of all lies in the fact that here students are admitted like a herd of lambs just to make money, nobody cares the simple relatable fact that:- If Input > Output, the pressure in between is bound to be created. This pressure takes the form of frustration, ill-habits, using illicit ways of getting placement in the few companies which come to the college, for ex: calling or emailing from the side to the officials which adds to the bad impression of the college as a whole.

The DMETians Lobby- In Which No One Cares

Again Remember whenever I say DMETians, it strictly means the passouts before the year 2000, or till the year IMU came into existence (i.e 2008). After 2008, all the passouts are just ‘IMU Kolkata passouts’, Note it. I would like to start this section by a simple but very relevant question – If you won a gold medal in an event, then how could you expect that gold medal not to get dirty after so many years without you polishing it? [Gold Medal – your DMET college which was dead way back], [You – DMETians]

1. Now let’s talk about ‘the saviours’ of this college, the DMETians lobby, they never come to the rescue for the present students, instead, they advise them not to speak against this college so that their reputation in their organisations remain safe. Now is the grave situation of illicit plundering of money by the college with the placements absolutely tending to zero? All they care about is just their reputation, but never bother to consider that the thread of their reputation also connects to the success and well being of the present batches in college.
2. The majority of alumni of DMET don’t consider the students of IMU Kolkata as their own juniors. Because they know the facts about the working and legislation of IMU, the quality of entrance exams, the quality of cadets. Comparing the present students with their former DMET passouts in the 20th century, the present ones don’t stand a chance. It is just because of the entrance exams, legislation, the curriculum of Indian Maritime University, which the present students can’t be blamed for.
3. But why don’t the present students digest this fact that the people who had passed out in the 20th century don’t even consider the present generations as their juniors? If now is not the time to stand by the juniors, then when?
4. Imagine that there is a wall in the year 2008 (the time when IMU came into effect), the passouts previous to 2008 have their own fraternity, the rest of the students after 2008 are mere silly orphans who need to understand that they got no relationship with that fraternity. But who will educate this shining reality to these dumbos? The students can feel this in their full conscience and yet act like ostriches.
5. In order to protect the golden dignity of DMET (i.e the way it was in the 20th century), I want this college to immediately regulate the intake as per the output placements, to modify each of its policies as per the student’s welfare. Or if the former is not possible, this college should be closed, sadly. Otherwise, the college will live to see more miserable days further maligning the dignity of DMET.

My Questions To The Majority Of Those Unplaced Students

• After paying 10-12 lakhs for your graduation, do you afford to sit unemployed at your home?
• Won’t you feel ashamed when your parents, who spent this huge amount of money on your college studies, look at your face?
• Is the college not responsible for all these? The same college who never bothers to decrease the intake in ratio with the placement from final year and keeps on searching the ways to maximize its profit.
• When will your blood boil?
• If the same truth about this college had been provided to you beforehand, would you have taken admission in this college?
• Or will you again go in pursuit of the author of this article, ignoring the ways of improving the present condition of the pit you have fallen into?
• Or will you come together, join each other’s hands and shout in one voice against this atrocity and spread awareness that the same condition should not be met with any others child, any other students, who like you unknowing of this college’s true facts will take admission here and curse his decision afterwards at the time when he will see that the tree of his placement bore no fruit?
• Or will you again show your ‘Teacher Pampering’ by not questioning or asking them for help in your placements who never bothered to help you out at your prime motive i.e PLACEMENTS? All they bother about is their monthly salaries, rest everything is just a formality.

My Questions To The Teachers AT IMU, Kolkata

• The students who respect you so much, who follow your words, do their work on time maintaining full copies and relevant stuff; don’t you feel ashamed of not helping them in their prime motive, i.e Placements? At least not with the placements directly, but you can still help them indirectly by standing with them to support their aim rather than taking the side of the administration in its mischievous profit-making tactics, opposing the students every time when it comes to student’s welfare.
• How do you wash your face and look in the mirror before sleep?
• Is your teaching profession just reduced to your monthly salaries?
• Or would you come forward to support the cause and oppose every legislative guideline which is against the student’s welfare, first one starting from the reduction of intake in the new batch in accordance with the placement of the passing out batch?

My Questions To The DMETian Lobby

• Sorry, there are no questions, as you don’t consider the present batches as your own juniors.
• You have your own fraternity with people who are well qualified and are in influential positions who never bother to look at what’s happening to the present batches, and what could be done for their welfare.
• You might sympathize with the present students. But the reality is that you fail to do the action on the ground because you don’t even bother to stand by them whenever they need you most.
• The quality of the present batches is difficult to alter but you can, by your peer pressure in the ministry, demand the same DMET which was before, it’s selection, it’s autonomy, it’s glory. Otherwise, you live to see worse days. This would be the ultimate help on a tertiary level that you could do.

• At last, your parents’ Rs 10,00,000 – 12,00,000 of hard-earned money will go in vain. Mark my words. If you enrol in this college, who will you blame after you get to know this truth slowly- slowly in the passage of time?
