Abortion, despite being an essential health service, is treated as a taboo in most societies. The source of this stigma is often our immediate surroundings – families, friends, and the media. As part of The YP Foundation’s commitment to tackling stigma around abortion, we asked young people in our network to describe the first time they heard the word “abortion”. Here’s what we got!
किसी बॉलीवुड मूवी में बहुत पहले यह शब्द सुना था। शब्द तो कुछ और ही था मगर उसका समानार्थी शब्द यही था-“गर्भपात” या एबॉर्शन।
बहुत समय बाद फिर जैसे-जैसे भारतीय सिनेमा में यह शब्द जैसे प्रचलन की तरह हो गया, तब इसके बारे में जानने को मिला। जो सीखा था, वो ये था, “जब दुर्घटनावश या अनचाहे तौर पर स्त्री के गर्भ में बालक आ जाता हो और लोक लाज के भय से या सही समय ना होने से, सही तरीके से परवरिश ना कर पाने के भय से उस गर्भ में आ गए नई जीव का अंत कर दिया जाता है, उसे गर्भपात का नाम दे दिया जाता है।”
ये तो वो बताया जो मैंने सिनेमा और इंटरनेट के माध्यम से सीखा मगर समय के साथ और आसपास के जीवन से जो समझ में आया वो यह कि महज़ लापरवाही की वजह से एक नन्हे शिशु को कानूनी तौर पर हत्या कर देना गर्भपात कहलाता है।
कुछ समय और बीतने के बाद मैंने अपने कॉलेज की ओर से ‘YP Foundation’ मेऺ SRHR प्रशिक्षण लिया, जिसमें मैंने जाना कि गर्भपात को हत्या का नाम नहीं दिया जा सकता है, क्योंकि इसे किसी मजबूरी या मर्जी से कराया जाता है।
भारत सरकार ने इसके लिए कानूनी नियम भी बनाए हैं जिसके अंतर्गत हर गर्भवती महिला को गर्भपात का अधिकार होता है मगर इसमें भी कुछ नियम और शर्तें होती हैं।
हर नियम और शर्तें महिला की आर्थिक, शारीरिक, मानसिक और सामाजिक परिस्थिति को देखकर ही दिया जाता है। महिला को हमेशा यह कोशिश करनी चाहिए कि गर्भपात कराना या गर्भपात को लेकर कोई भी जानकारी डॉक्टर की सलाह लेकर ही करनी चाहिए।
Translation: I heard this word a long time ago in a Bollywood movie. The word they used was the termination of pregnancy which is also known abortion. This is what I learnt through cinema and the internet. But, what I came to understand over time and from lived experiences is that killing a young child legally due to mere negligence is called abortion. Or so I thought.
After some time, when I was college, I underwent SRHR training at the YP Foundation. Here I learnt that abortion cannot be called as murder because it is done by force or will. The government of India has also made legal rules for this, under which every pregnant woman has abortion rights, but the law also has some terms and conditions.
I also learnt that every woman should try to get abortion-related information only from a professional doctor.
This story is one of many submissions that we received. The YP Foundation’s Abortion Campaign works towards destigmatising abortion and increasing access to safe and comprehensive abortion care services. We engage with young people to advocate for abortion as a reproductive right, especially among marine fisherfolk in Kerala and tea plantation labourers in Assam.
