World Schizophrenia Day: Why It Is Important To Know About It

As I was thinking what to write today, I came up with something called Schizophrenia. It is a psychiatric condition in which certain chemicals in the brain are out of balance. This may lead to a lack of co-ordination of thoughts, emotions and actions. People usually confuse it with split personality disorder, but it is not true. People suffering from this disease don’t have clarity over what they are doing.

Symptoms

  1. Hallucination: Hearing and seeing things that are not present
  2. Delusion
  3. Abnormal behaviour
  4. Disorganised speech
  5. Disturbances in speech

The symptoms usually start during the age of 16-30 years, and men are more prone to these.

What Causes Schizophrenia?

There is no single reason why a person suffers from schizophrenia. However, some of the factors that make a person more prone are:

Myths

There are several myths around this condition. Some of them are:

1. Schizophrenia can’t be cured

It’s a false belief that if one is identified with schizophrenia, they can be cured and most of them lead a normal life after they are completely cured

2. People suffering from schizophrenia show aggressive behaviour

People with this disease are usually silent but some may show aggressive behaviour.

3. People suffering from schizophrenia have split personality

Not everyone suffering from schizophrenia has a split personality.

You may say what is there in this condition. However, it is a serious condition because there over three million people suffering from this condition, out of which a large proportion doesn’t get proper medical treatment. If you know anyone with these symptoms, please get them diagnosed before it’s late.
