From Mumbai to Kolkata: Updates On Anti-CAA Protests Across The Country

The protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act only seem to be gaining pace throughout the country. While the protests took a violent turn in Lucknow, they were carried out peacefully in Mumbai. Here is a list of all the significant places where the anti-CAA protests continued yesterday, 19 December 2019, Thursday:

People continued with protests in Delhi even though Section 144 had been imposed in the Red Fort area.

Delhi: Protests were carried out in Jantar Mantar and Red Fort, and several protestors, including Yogendra Yadav, were detained at the protests in Delhi. As many as 19 metro stations were shut down along with Airtel and Vodafone shutting down voice, SMS, and internet services in some regions of Delhi.

Lucknow: Protests in Lucknow, particularly in Hazratganj and Daliganj region, took a violent turn when the protestors pelted the policemen with stones, burnt vehicles and set a CNN van and a police outpost on fire. The police fired tear gas shells and resorted to lathi-charge. Section 144 has been imposed in Uttar Pradesh, and internet services were shut down in Sambhal, U.P.

“Properties of those involved in damaging public assets will be seized and auctioned to compensate for losses. Those involved in violence have been identified through video, CCTV footage,” said CM Yogi Adityanath.

Mumbai: Peaceful protests were carried out in August Kranti Maidan, by Hundreds of students from city college other than Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), and IIT-Bombay. Several Bollywood stars, including Farhan Akhtar and Konkana Sen Sharma, also joined the protests in Mumbai.

Bengaluru: Hundreds of people, including historian Ramachandra Guha who had gathered outside Town Hall in the city to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed NRC, were detained by the Bengaluru Police. Section 144 was also imposed across the city.

West Bengal: The anti-CAA protests intensified in Kolkata, West Bengal, yesterday, and the protests got violent. A mega rally in protest of CAA and NRC from Ramlila Maidan to Park Circus in south Kolkata was called for by seventeen Left parties. 

“The CAA and the NRC are ploys to destroy the country’s secular democratic structure and create a communal divide,” said Left Front chairman Biman Bose.

Patna: Amidst the anti-CAA protests in Bihar, train services were affected, and roads were blocked when several activists of Jan Adhikar Party (JAP) and MP Pappu Yadav burnt tires on the road adjacent to the Rajendra Nagar Terminus. 

Varanasi: Several Lef-wing activists were arrested at the Chetganj area while they made a bid to reach Beniabagh ground, to carry out the anti-CAA protests. Several Samajwadi party leaders and workers also demonstrated at district headquarters.

The anti-CAA protests were not only limited to India but were also held by Indian students in London, Toronto, Berlin, and several other places.
