Firstly, I want to get my facts right:
1. The Citizenship Amendment Bill otherwise known as CAB allows illegal immigrants an opportunity for Indian citizenship if they are Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Parsis or Buddhists from Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh (completely excluding Muslims).
2. The National Register of Citizenship (NRC) has also come into existence, which means every citizen of India, irrespective of their religion, will have to provide documentary proof that they are not immigrants. If you do not have documentary evidence, you will lose Indian citizenship and will be sent to detention camps. But here is where CAB comes into play and provides citizenship to the religious communities, except Muslims.
These people will lose not only their voting rights but also their land, their identity, and their home.
India has always been a secular country, and this right here is an act against it.
Didn’t the students of Jamia university start a peaceful protest which turned into a war zone because of the Delhi Police department? Isn’t it true that the government responded to the peaceful protest by lathi-charge and tear gas? Isn’t it terrifying to see the police department (who we trust for our safety and protection) attacking unarmed students to the extent that they are seriously injured and had to be hospitalized? The act of violence by the government is unacceptable and proves how low the government is willing to go.
What’s more heartbreaking than seeing people on streets fighting for their lands is that people elected by them are causing it. This is being done by the people on whom this country had put its faith in. It’s great to see people protesting on streets and raising their voice on social media from all over India for a cause. This is an act of discrimination, and I take a stand against it along with every person protesting against it.
It’s high time we all come out together and show the power of unity. It’s time to show the government the strength we are capable of as we stand united.
