The Eureka Moment: The Basics Of School Consolidation In Rajasthan

Danish Siddiqui for Reuters

The Eureka Moment is a podcast series on emerging ideas that can transform India’s governance in the future. The series is produced by the Accountability Initiative at the Centre for Policy Research.

In Episode 2, “School Consolidation in Rajasthan: The Basics,” hear about the short-term effects of school mergers as a policy tool intended to increase efficiency in the public education system, in Rajasthan.

The government school education system in India is facing numerous challenges. To address some of them, the draft National Education Policy (NEP) released in May 2019 has mooted the creation of school complexes for better resourcing of government schools and curbing low student enrollment. A school complex will be a single organisational and administrative unit, created by bringing together multiple public schools. Rajasthan is already implementing its version of a school consolidation policy. This episode discusses a new Working Paper by Accountability Initiative on its short-term effects and sheds light on the immediate successes and challenges of the policy.

Accountability Initiative has worked extensively in Rajasthan, which is a PAISA state for the research group.
