People say millennials don’t have much direction in life, they are whimsical, fickle and impulsive; and being a millennial myself I agree, to some extent. We are surely whimsical and impulsive, but we are also practical and pragmatic. We are always on the move; changing jobs, moving cities, hungry to explore.
The world around us is just the same; always changing and always on the move. We are the 4G generation; everything is fast: from fast food to fast fashion. However, I like to believe that our constant moving, climbing and running isn’t because we are racing with each other. It’s a race with ourselves. We want a lot of things, and we want them now. We realize that running after a goal that we have set for ourselves at our own pace is more fulfilling even if it makes us move four cities in five years.
We millennials like to live freely; we are constantly facing a lack of space and understanding. From hurdles in choosing our dream careers to choosing the way we want to live our lives, from the person we love regardless of their gender, caste, and religion to how we envision our own ‘space’ in life.
The one criticism millennials always face is that we lack stability and a sense of home: a place to call our own, a haven to just be. Even though we keep moving, all we truly want is a space of our own to stop, think and breathe—a place to call our home.
The new HDFC Home Loans campaign film explains this feeling perfectly. This relatable and energetic campaign brought to light by Delhi-based film production collective, WhiteBalance, hits the right notes:
A young entrepreneur runs behind numbers and presentations all day; an aspiring dancer practices till her body gives up and then some more; an athlete pushes herself beyond the limit—all to achieve the goal they have set for themselves.
Our generation is the generation of dreamers. We crave independence from social conventions, unwilling to be tied down or tamed. Thus, we all want our own home: a place to unwind after a day of hard work, a place to chill, a place to be ourselves!
– Just another millennial trying to catch her breath!
