Do you know that about 92 women are raped in India every day?
The incidents of rapes have damaged the moral fabric of this nation. India is suffering from the shock of heinous rape cases such as Kathua (Jammu and Kashmir) and Unnao (Uttar Pradesh), almost on a daily basis.
These incidents in different parts of the country always put the spotlight on India’s failure in protecting its women.
One of the most highlighted cases in India was Delhi’s December 2012 gang-rape. It’s been almost six years since this infamous case in which a young paramedic was brutally gang-raped and abused in a moving bus in South Delhi.
This case had led to a change in India’s legal system, including the passing of sexual assault laws, and the creation of fast courts for the hearing in rape cases. Recent cases have also led to a change in the legal system.
Four states: Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh have introduced a death penalty for rapes of minors below 12 years of age.
According to the news reports, the centre is also contemplating amending the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act to introduce the provision of the death penalty for raping minors aged below 12 years.
Understanding these issues of sexual violence and crime against women is imperative to create a suitable solution to this problem. Most of the cases go unreported because of the societal and family pressure, which also enables the offenders. The moral sense of Indian society seems to have gone wayward with little regard left for what is right and what is wrong.
