When Life Gives You Bananas…

Do we find the element of the Hawthorne effect in the recent episode of over-charging from the  Bollywood actor, Rahul Bose? Disturbed yet highly confident about the bill issued by the posh five-star hotel in Chandigarh, he thought it fit to publicize the odd total of two bananas. It was surprising for him that the two bananas cost so dearly as the issued bill mentioned the amount as ₹442.50. Although the people visiting posh restaurants or hotels are used to paying exorbitant prices for even a bottle of water, yet none of them has taken interest in bringing the matter on social media. It wasn’t a big deal, but it needed to be brought up.

All kinds of good and bad things happen to us in our daily lives. Some of them might be a big a deal at that moment, but later we think how mundane the event was. The cost of those bananas was unbelievably high, and it was not something irrelevant.

The cost of two bananas shot up too high just because it was listed as ‘fruit platter’ in the bill. The actor’s 38-second video caught the attention of Chandigarh excise taxation commissioner Mandip Batra towards the genuine woe of the actor. He ordered a thorough investigation of the GST angle. The inquiry established the fact the hotel had wrongfully charged the actor and a fine of ₹25000 was slapped upon the hotel.

The actor did the right thing by bringing up the matter in public, and the action taken by the authorities against the concerned hotel made them reconsider the unnecessary billing. When fresh fruit is not included in the limits of GST, why was it charged?
