What Led To Sebastian Kurz Removal As The Chancellor Of Austria?

Anyone who is keen to research on topics related to international relations, they might know who Sebastian Kurz is. Sebastian Kurz was the youngest appointed Chancellor of Austria. He became Chancellor after forming an alliance with the Freedom Party, which is a different political entity of Austria. While in office, Sebastian Kurz was complimented for his working style but was also criticised for his decisions such as banning full face cover as well as his tough stance on the issue of migration.

Although Sebastian Kurz was sworn in as Chancellor in 2017, his ship hit troubled waters triggered by the publishing of the political scandal popularly known as “Ibiza affair”. In this scandal, a video was released in German media where a Freedom Party politician named Heinz Christian Strache was seen to be discussing allocation of government contracts to companies in exchange of their support in the party’s political campaigns. When this scandal was exposed, Sebastian Kurz was also implicated in this, due to which the ruling coalition ended and also resulted in a no-confidence motion against the incumbent Chancellor by political opposition. Sebastian Kurz lost the no-confidence motion and turned from being the youngest appointed chancellor to was the youngest appointed Chancellor. Following his departure, a caretaker government was set-up and the snap elections were announced to take place in the month of September.

As the election will take place in the month of September, survey polls were conducted to determine which party will win. If we see the process of appointment of Chancellors- the Chancellor is appointed by the President and the candidate is generally the leader of the largest party in the National Council which is one of the two houses of the Austrian Parliament. As per the survey, Austrian People’s party will have the highest vote share followed by other political parties. If this will turn in reality then there is a high possibility that Sebastian Kurz will return as the Chancellor of Austria because still, he is the one who is leading the Austrian People’s party.
